SHOOT ME NOW

This just arrived in my email inbox - will we ever have enough of this sh&t???

Next Pro Tools Users Group Meeting - Thursday August 23rd 2007 - Pro Tools Vs. Analogue Console Mixing

The next Pro Tools Users Group meeting will be on Thursday August 23rd 2007 at 7.30pm at RSPE Audio Solutions in Universal City, Los Angeles.

Please visit us at www.ProToolsUsers.org to sign up for the event.

(If you haven't signed as a member on our new website yet, you'll need to do that first.)

Some people prefer the sound when you mix digital audio through an analog console. Some people prefer the sound when all mixing and processing are done in Pro Tools with no analog gear whatsoever. So, Digidesign recently did an experiment to see how closely you could match some mixes done on a large-format analog console using Pro Tools and modeled console channel strip plug-ins. They have posted the resulting audio files for you to hear.

Join us at the Pro Tools Users group to go in depth on this very popular discussion and recent web test. Tom Graham, frequent User Group moderator and Digidesign LA Icon Specialist, will take us through how the test was set up and will play the full 24 Bit versions of the double blind test. Also joining Tom will be mixers Brian Malouf and Erik Zobler who participated in the analogue mixing portion on the SSL 4000 G Console fully using Dynamics, EQ and the Quad Bus Compressor, and to answer questions and offer insights.

Brian Carter, digidesign demo specialist will take us through the new and powerful sampler plug-in that redefines the art of sampling: Structure.

Thanks,
The ProToolsUsers Team

Perhaps those who indulge in this debate with such vigour (and those who get so excited about PT v. other DAWs) realise that for the rest of humanity, this is the most asinine of all debate topics.

It's as pointless as PC v. Mac or any other of these completely nerdish anorak debates that clog up forums and stop others from being able to discuss in a sober and unemotional manner matters effecting our industry.

As far as sound quality, warmth and detail, give me analog and 2" tape any day.

They can argue that digital is cleaner all they want, but they'll never convince me
that it's better.

Even worse than debating analog v. digital is debating about debating analog v. digital.

Personally, I'm interested in this debate. Not for the sake of debate at all, but for the simple reason that I am trying to determine if a different way of working would benefit my sound.

If you think it's a stupid topic, or think it's silly, why post a thread like this at all? Why waste your time with it?

There was a thread about mixing on a Real SSL vs SSL plugins.. They would switch back and forth and dare you to tell the diffrence..

I heard the diffrence.. The plugs sounded boxy, 2 dimensional and didnt seen pleasing to the ear. The real Console smoked the Plugs.

So you're the guy who decides who matters and who doesn't? Sounds like a tough job.

Who cares, I mean really who cares? Use whatever you use and stop bitching about it. Some of you guys are amongst the most ridiculous I've ever had a discussion with. There are plenty of pros that are ITB, there are plenty that are OTB but that shouldn't matter to a single person on here. Whatever you use is what you use and what works for you. Why waste your time complaining about this shit, or debating it. WHO THE **** CARES!!!!!

Yeah, and it's about as asynine as arguing that...

apples are better than oranges, or that
macs are better than PCs, or that
PHP is better than ASP, or that
Pro Tools is better than Tape

because you can't prove opinion.

It's amazing that somebody would actually go out of there way to build a forum on this subject. All you need is one thread, cuz all of them amount to the same thing...

Adam Sandler in a tub battling it out with hair care products.

Besides, sound isn't about music anyway. Everybody knows that.

Especially today, when it seems the era of recorded music as a commodity of value is finished.

If people are going to rip your music off of Gnutella, why the fvck would you care if it was mixed on an SSL or in PT?

Non-issue for the pros. Non-issue for the home recordists. Big issue for the wannabees.

Now show yourself.

But... Macs are better than PC's!

Generally, you're right, there's no debating taste and everyone's entitled to their opinion.

However, if a 13 year old tells you that Nickelback is better than Nirvana, or Linkin Park are better than the Beastie Boys, you can rest assured that their opinion is wrong. Plain wrong.

There's an exception to every rule.

....including that rule about there being an exception to every rule.

My head hurts.
