Thread Starter | RME Fireface 800 (RME does/outdoes MOTU) "After more than 2 years of development, RME announced the Fireface 800, a 56-channel 24-bit / 192 kHz Wire audio interface. "RME's Multiface was the basis for the development of the Fireface 800. The unit offers 8 balanced line I/Os with software controlled switching of the reference levels (-10 dBV, +4 dBu, HiGain), realized discretely in the analog domain. Apart from the levels of the microphone pre-amps and the headphone outputs, all device settings are software controlled. Equipped with the latest A/D and D/A converter chips, all I/Os operate up to 192 kHz and reach even 119 dBA dynamic range on playback. "On the front side, the Fireface 800 has 4 discrete balanced microphone inputs with class-A stage, 48 V phantom powering and separate jack and XLR inputs, which can also be used as additional line inputs. Two of the four mic inputs are permanently available as channels 9 and 10, the other two can be used together with or alternatively to the inputs 7 / 8 on the back. .... More info at: http://messe.harmony-central.com/Mus...eFace-800.html Is RME out-MOTU-ing MOTU? Waddaya think? |

| I for one am very excited. Having just moved to a 12" PowerBook as my main composition and recording machine, I need something Firewire-based, period. With no PCMCIA slots on the 12", the other RME stuff is right out, which left me no (high-quality) choices but the Metric Halo, and I like choices Also, the inclusion of lots of video interfacing makes this very useful for anyone working with video, as I am. Removing the need for a dedicated sync unit to work with video is a nice move... Anyone wanna take a guess at street price???

| I am interested in a firewire device as well. This is vaporware just like the mackie stuff. Still--one hopes it will perform well when it comes out in 'summer'. The promo was an artist's drawing, so its not that far along. Isn't the key to these kind of things the software drivers? That's what kills everybody--won't work with this or that motherboard and so on. |
