I Am So Stoked All My High-End Gear Doesn't Work

Okay, maybe that's a bit of an over-statement.

Not ALL of my high-end gear broke because I'm a snob. I buy, well sell my soul for, really nice stuff. But everything that involves tubes-preamps, EQ, compressor, amplifiers, etc. some way or another this month took a sh|t.

So I've been left to play with my last pair of pres-my quad eights, and
and my Midas mixer. I am using an e47c and a RCA 74 junior, but that's it, and I'm blown away.

I learned a valuable lesson today where I don't feel like I need a specific version of X or Y to get a job done.

It's all about experience.

Okay, I lied. I just saw I'm actually the drum mic through a Pultec mixer for some tubage.

I'm still stoked. i feel like I've reached that epiphany where the ruler and compass aren't necessary in the design. Only useful.

I'm going to record some more now.

Cheers,
-soupking

Thanks man. It's just 2 tracks to a 1/4" tape deck but they sound really cool on A7's. :0) Like I listen to my half-assed attempt at playing drums and the toms sound all cushy and round. Like a something a synth would want to sample.

I'd like to add that 3rd story windows were made for tape machines. My f#&king input monitor won't give me a signal so I'm screwed once again. I've got to stop doing what I want to do until my "tech" has time to look at it.

I'll have a track done sometime before Christmas.

This is one of 4 tape machines in this room that doesn't work.

5 minuntes later, my spring reverb breaks. Awesome. One minute it's glorious, the next it's half recorded over. The love, the hate, I'm so tragically hip I could vomit right about now.

Sorry to hear you're having a rough day mate.

This stuff can be like a fine classic motor car.

When it's all working correctly it's wonderful,

IF... you can keep it all working correctly.

Totally, it's like all my damn gear is melting. I was actually scared to use the mics I did today in fear of something suddenly mysteriously not responding.

It's like that movie Room 1408 or something.

Well, Mercury just came out of retrograde so you can't blame it on that.... Maybe Venus? You may want to invest in some kind of power conditioner or something if you haven't already. Any big thunderstorms lately?

That's so funny! I just used that exact expression to one of my clients to describe my schedule! I knew it!

No thunderstorms, but my room is hot. I'm thinking my room's too hot and it might be affecting my gear.

Probably the heat or humidity or both. These fine vintage pieces get really hot all by themselves then add a 40 degree C day on top and that could equate to a meltdown.

When I have all my analog gear on my room stays warm in winter. In Summer air con is a must, it's expensive to install but cheap to run these days, I just turn mine on between takes or setups.

Man I hate the days where nothing goes right.

HA!

My God, but that's a brilliant quote.

(Why isn't there a 'guffaws 'till he coughs' smilie?)

Probably, I've only used this gear for the past few months so I don't have much time to compare it to.

I keep forgetting how much heat these things put off, especially my mixer and powerbook. Man, I have 2 fans in the control booth. I'm running out of room too while I need more rack space. I'm thinking about chopping out a third of my desk and installing a rack tower....with a fan.
