| Gear interested | Where to live after college This year will be my last at my university. I figured now was as good of a time as any to start looking for somewhere to live. Suggestions for places outside of the US are always preferable as I do not really care for the three big music cities (NY, LA, and Nashville). Also, anything far north is a bonus as I don't take to heat and sun well. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. | LA and NY are trendy. Nashville hasn't changed in 50 years, musically speaking. Its the same old boring 3 chords and campy lyrics. You can't go wrong with that formula. I may move there and cash in...... The only thing that bothers me about nashville is having to stomach all those tele's day in and day out But seriously you can make it anywhere really. There are plenty of potential clients everywhere. I bet the ratio of musicians vs population are similar in most cities even NY or LA |

| Are you joking? There are over 6 billion people in the world all living where ever the hell they're living and most of them would either tell you that the place they live is the best place on Earth or tell you that the place they live is sheer hell and they'd move in a heartbeat given the chance. Me? I wannna move to Jackson, MS but can't until my youngest daughter graduates from High School in 4 years... then again in 4 years, I might just dig living where I'm living so much I'll never want to leave. If you really have a hard on to move outside the US, move to Rio. While you might get your liver taken out after a good night of drinking the women in Rio are absolutely stunning... and the hookers work damn cheap [and they're absolutely stunning as well]. Peace.

| If you don't like heat and sun try San Francisco. It's kinda like living outside the US too. Regards, John |

Indianapolis? Cincinnati? St. Louis? Detroit? And unless you speak a foreign language, anywhere other than England(more specifically, London which is already overpopulated to hell) or Ireland(not a huge music scene) wouldn't be a good idea. If your looking for a smaller music village than the "Big 3" US cities, then try this: If the city has a NFL or NBA team, then it's more than adequate. Cheers.

| Gear interested | I have been told that location is not important, but the majority of people where I live now seem to do music as more of a hobby rather than a profession. I figured that relocating to somewhere with a bigger music scene would help to lengthen my list of contacts. I interned in London earlier this summer and absolutely loved the city. Easily in my top five favorite cities. I only wish I could afford to move there (cost of living there is ridiculous. I wouldn't mind having to learn a different language if there were enough reasons to move to a non-english speaking country. | move to Berlin. It has a huge arts and music scene. it's insanely cheap (still making a comeback from the collapse of the wall). most germans speak english, so you'll be ok to learn german at your own pace. and, in my experience germans are just great people. oh, and it's not too hot. seriously. you'd be crazy to not consider this city. |

| Berlin is an interesting choice. Germany is just beautiful. Heck, I was born there. I wonder about making a living but I guess you can anywhere if you are good at what you do. If you want a music scene in the US, and if you are a citizen i don't see why you'd want to live anywhere else, Chicago comes to mind. It's a bit farther north. The rest I know of are down south. Atlanta, Austin, Dallas. Middle TN is a great place to live also. |

| Gear interested | Germany seems like it would be a great place to live. Haven't been there, but if it is anything like the Netherlands I am sure that I would love it. I have had my eye on Canada as I have visited there a handful of times and I love their weather. It would be interesting to hear from some Canadian GS members to hear their take on places like vancouver, toronto, montreal, etc. Kyle Nuernberger Music Engineering Technology Ball State University Muncie, IN |

| Gear nut | San Francisco = $$$ Moved away for college, gonna be damn near impossible to move back. Though if you want to be in the area and don't mind commuting, there's lots of places in the East Bay to live for less. |

| Lives for gear | Kyle, I'd suggest that you move to Nigeria or The Congo. Alternatively, Knoxville, Tenn. MAJOR Scene!

| Why not Portland, Oregon? Everyone else seems to move there right after college, and start a band, and work in a coffee joint.

| Lives for gear | Mississippi has a river As far as fletcher wanting to move to jackson.................WHY??? Nothing here unless it's some type of retirement for you. And even so, I would suggest Madison, Clinton, Ridgeland(all just 5 mins outside of jackson) or biloxi(the coast). Those cities are your retirement cities and if you left now while your kid was just getting to HS, those are the best schools. (clinton is the best though........... ) |

While I live in N.Van, most of my work over the last year has been in Victoria (a 1.5hr ferry crossing from Vancouver) and that's a very cool, yet small, city. Lot's of artists and not a lot in the way of studios from what I've seen in downtown Victoria. I've only found 2 and one looks outfitted more like a good project studio (or mediocre by LA standards . I've not seen what I'd consider an "A" room in Victoria but there is one other studio that is very well equipped re outboard gear. Victoria has better weather overall than Vanc (less rain) and even has a couple of ferries that run directly to the US.One of the cool (yet unconventional) gigs I get 2-3 x' a year, takes place in Tofino, on the west coast of Vancouver Island. I record these singer seminars at the lodge and am put up for 4-5 days, recording the singers and accompanist. Great, easy gig. It's god's country and I always look forward to the call to go there. Sheet, I'd do that one for free! For a real happening music scene in Canada though, I'd look into Montreal. Rolling Stone referred to it as "The Next Seattle" awhile back I heard. Lots of music there. One concern is the language barrier, seeing that it's primarily French Canadian but I just heard on t.v. the other day that a recent study showed english is becoming more and more prevalent amongst younger people. Toronto is the closest thing to a large "US" urban centre. It used to be the hub of Canadian music and probably still is to some degree, but given the choice, I'd look into Montreal before Toronto, even with Montreal's horribly cold winters.

| Lives for gear | why not just go where there is work? i graduated college 3 years ago, and immediately moved to NY where there was work, then after 6 months moved to miami because thats where there was work, then after 3 months i moved to Las Vegas where there was work, and after a year and a half of that, i moved to Los Angeles where there is work now... i just go with the flow!!
