My $46,000 renovation (with pics!)

Yay! I get my own construction thread! I was almost out of debt and decided to take out another $50,000 (needed to put back a couple grand to live on during construction).

My studio is in the lower level of my ranch home. It is about 1200 sq feet. Control room, main room, lounge, bathroom and 15x8 space between control & drum room (now will be the bar).

I painted all walls in all rooms the same color, had the carpeting taken out and a hardwood floor floated on a rubber mat in the control and drum room. Other rooms have tile.

Here are some "BEFORE" pics of control room, drum room, future site of bar (the white wall), bathroom.

I like the Argosy desk and I'm glad I got it, but some things I did not like...

Hours to put the damn thing together.

After assembled it left me with about 3 garbage bags of trash
and about 60 pounds of cardboard waste from shipping.

It is the EXACT same quality as the furniture at Target ("cams" to attach parts, fiberboard that chips easy, etc. The website pics look way better.

So I did this thread because I am out-of-state in pre-production for a record. I am killing time in the hotel. I get back Friday afternoon to see the progress over the last few days. Right now I am eating chinese food and drinking a Colt 45. Good times.

Other things my "new" studio will offer:

The beverage fridge will be built into the cabinets in the bar and fully stocked with wine, champagne, beer, energy drinks, soda, water and fresh fruit.

My assistant will also make fruit smoothies, espresso, and cocktails.

The lounge has HDTV, wireless gaming, DVD, premium movie channels, wireless Internet, unlimited long distance and a laptop for client use.

All the above included in my rate, no charge.

Cool, that explains the 2 case of Doles Bananas you got stacked up in the studio. I was hoping for banana daquiris though.

Nice upfit, congrats.

Looks exciting... I can see you've had to slum it with the Colt 45, but creating in that new space with the nice outboard additions should be worth it. =)

Nope. All Nuendo with a custom PC from Scott at ADK. Most of that stuff went back to the guy who started the studio with me but had no time to work there. I imagine it will sit in the bubble wrap for the next 2,000 years at his house.

Free wine, champagne and beer????

that would cost me a fortune. seems like all my bands(except the christians) are complete alchoholics. guess you could have drinking contests

the band to this date that drank the most was a polka band. couple bavarians in band....simply unbelievable how many beer bottles i had to clean up after sessions

I have always kept a small fridge with drinks. Surprising, very few have tried to empty it. In fact, I can only think of two people in the last year who drank a lot of beer. If I spend a hundred bucks a month and I can do that for people, why not?

However, when the fridge is empty, it's empty. I will restock it for the next project (I usually only work with one at a time).

Rate? I charge $1400 a week. I work from 10am-6pm. That comes to $35/hr. I can live my quiet little modest life, pick the work I want, people usually understand and appreciate it.

I can see his logic in this though ...The more pissed they become, the more time would be needed to record ! Hoping he is billing by the hour

What kind of fabric did you use to cover your bass traps on your walls and where did you get it?

It is the carpet you get at car stereo places that they wrap subwoofer boxes with. They are acoustic panels, but the original color was horrid. A roll of that carpet was like $40.00

Thanks for the kind words everyone!
