as for transfering files maybe someone will be gracious enough to let us use their FTP site?

Sounds cool!

The idea of letting anybody who wants to mix it is nice as well, could practise my mixskills with some fresh material then (without necessairily having to show my attempt ;-) )

Might be able to help a bit with keys as well if needed.

Teach I was thinking about posting some initial grooves on my website at first that you guys could check out. Just kind of a notepad so you guys can think up some parts to them or think up additional parts to go before or after.

If anybody wants to send me some of their ideas I could post them up there too.

After that it get`s a little trickier.

When we get to the point we want to do the real tracks we got to find a way to transfer WAV files around and have them work in whatever system we`re using. I use Nuendo myself but I imagine everybodies using different software.

Does most DAW software let you just download any old WAV file into your system at this point or does it have to be the same software to make it work ?

Once we get past that I could do something like post the WAV`s on my website in a different area. (hidden area maybe with password access or something. Up to you guys.)
Or maybe we could even set up a new site to house all our ideas somehow.

To be honest I`m a little naive about this side of things so if you guys have any suggestions throw them out there.

Glad you see it that way too.

I don`t feel as guilty now for getting delayed a bit. (although I may have missed the dorritos)

I still think I`ll get something to you guys by the end of this weekend or beginning of next week.

I agree we should definately take a relaxed attitude on this but if we all push ourselves a little bit I bet we can get some stuff in the works fairly quickly.

DrDelta I would be quite happy if you would add some keyboard parts to this. That`s the one thing we don`t have at this point other than some horns. (and some chick backup singers)

Kev I'm as green as you are regarding the whole computer thing, but I think every DAW in the world should be able to read WAV by now.

Kev,
.wav files are compatiable with almost every DAW in existence. We should make a SMPTE start point like 1:00:00:00 and have everyone time stamp their pieces, then the files could be transfered over the net or on cd by mail. Also time stamping will ensure that all files remain in their respective locations and no-one is moving things around in the session.
Also selecting from the start of the song to the end on each track and consolidating that selection would be helpful. Each track will be the length of the song no matter where in the song the audio is, and each track will be easily aligned in the event of a problem as each track will start at the beginning.

I'll talk to my web guy to get my FTP site going (haven't needed it yet) ya'll can use that once we get to that point. I think tossing around MP3s during the "build" stage would be the easiest and then uploading full files during the mix stage, but if there is a better way let's do that. 24 bit, 44.1 format?

consolidated tracks (WAV) from the beginning of the song would be the easiest way of handling this whole baby. Every track starts at the same place.

I might be too late to offer some funky drumming, but let me know when and where I can hear this thing while it's being developed.

I can add some backing percussion if it works for the tune.

Well we already have 7 guitar players Jax so I`m sure we can stuff in some more percussion.

Allways room for more.

We might have to start 2 bands at the rate were going.

I went down to the studio today but I`m a rusty old man so tomorrow I`m going to practice my ass off and figure out the MP3 shit.
Hopefully I `ll get my game back by Sunday And I`ll go down Sunday or Monday and do the scratch tracks.

That`s very generous of you 2leod.

I didn`t see this post before for some reason.

I`ve got some rough ideas on an MP3 right now that I can give you guys and I`ll work on getting another together quick.

If you all send me an email saying where you want me to send it to I`ll get on it right away.
Feel free to give me some suggestions if you want or some stuff any of you have been working on.

I`ve sent a copy to Teacher and Jack allready because I had their adresses.

Once again sorry for taking so long.
I got it together on Monday but due to computer illiteracy I couldn`t get the MP3 working right and emailed till Wednesday morning. (I know excuses excuses)

Well this seems to be a thread that's died an ugly death. I've done some tracks on the Eyar tune. Some body take this guitar outta my hand before I do the whole thing!!!

Now I just need to find out who to send them to.

I didn't spend a lot of time guys. But I put multiple guitars on it. It's kind of instrumental pop-y. Everyone will probably hate it because it's kind of weird. Like an instrumental Japanese bubble gum song. Probably make a million dollars!
My middle name is "Layer" so apologies before hand.

Hey Henry I sent you an email today.

I`ve been in contact with everybody via email or the chat so I stopped posting here as much.

Go ahead and send them to me and I`ll get them out to everybody else.

It`s gotta be MP3 format for now though until we can figure out a system for uploading bigger files.

2leods graciously offered to let us use his ftp server but I also plan on getting something like that together as I would like to do this kind of thing more in the near future.

On the real version (versions really. we`ve got 2 going now.) which I`ll start working on as soon as we have some kind of structure vocally we will definately find a way to use full 24 bit 44.1 files

Yeah that`s the beuty of this thing.

We can all round up a bunch of projects to do without dealing with the leg work and usual bullshit that`s involved with putting bands together.

Once we figure out whos doing what here we`ll definately find plenty of room for your lead guitar madness Randall.

I`m glad you like it Dj.

It`s been fun hearing the MP3`s people have sent me back. I`m a couple days away from having the ftp site up and then we can get more serious about this thing and people can access all the instruments instead of a couple at a time.

Something that I`ve talked to others about in the chat is the great learning experience we could all have by all of us doing a mix of this. We all have a pretty wide range of experiance it seems so it`s going to be interesting to see how we all use our ears differently with the same group of isntruments to mix.
Could be very educational at many different levels.

Originally I was pumped up about the musician side of it but combined with the recording aspect it seems even cooler to me.

That's a really good idea....and I think it would be great to hear the different results.
I wish I could contribute more musically but I don't play anything....
Maybe in the mix I can contribute some cool effects layers or something of that sort...

Does anyone know if this type of thing has been done before? An internet collaboration?

I`m sure it`s been done elsewhere but the guys over at PSW did it in a big way. They had like 10 -15 bands participate with a deadline and everything. That`s what gave me the idea though I`ve thought about trying to do this kind of thing before as I`m sure most of you have.

I`d like to get it down to where it`s easy and then we can all use eachother as session musicians on projects down the road.

The ftp thing is the hardest part of it for me but I think I`ve got it figured out now.

Great idea creating a pool of session musicians!

And yeah... there is a GOOD way of trading files. LOL

kool!

How come this thread has passed me by until now?

I'll be up for doing a mix as well if you're looking to get another set of ears in on it.

On the musical front, I can contribute sod all other than: a science experiment if needed, wibbly noises , spoken word samples/cuts, drum programming.

lemme know if you can use my services, I got the funk
