a question to RODE CLASSIC And/Or Microphone PROS!

My rode classic sounds fine, BUT - from time to time either the volume / quality goes DOWN alot or dissapears. Sometimes the audio goes into it, but sounds like theres a filter on it, making it sound crappy.

This usually gets temporarily "fixed" if I turn the power supply OFF and then ON again. After that "restart" it usually works fine until it decides to do that again..

I have not been able to complete a 1 hour plus session with a singer without having to turn it on and off atleast a few times.

Anyone know what can be the cause of this? Is this something common with the classic? Is the most likely source of the problem the power supply or the microphone?

Sounds likely that the Tube or power supply needs to be changed or repaired. You should service it for sure.

I dont have much experience with tubes in microphones, but those are the same problems one would have if the tubes were dying in a guitar amp. Thats the cheapest fix, try replacing the tube first.

although changing the tube would be the obvious first step, and most likely the problem - I had a similar issue w/ a mic once and it turned out to be a loose connection to the capsule . . .

I just got off the phone with the local rode service center and they first thought it could be the capsule.. But since it sometimes can be on for hours without any problems - they said it could also be the power supply..

God damn its expensive to change the capsule for the rode.. Over 400 USD to have it replaced..

But they are not sure ofcourse. Gotta see it first.

Rode capsule

Wow $400 for a capsule..

I have a Classic I and I remember that the Rode tech told me that the capsule was an original NT2 capsule,...it sells for $150.

So $250 for half an hour job that is a great salary!!!

Ouch!!!!

The Rode classic used the same Chinese capsule as the NT-2. You can buy an old one of those and steal it. They are probably quoting the Aussie made Rode capsule which has a different sound. That would change it into the newer Rode tube sound.

is it hard to change these on your own if you are not a tech? Or is it such a difficult thing to do that a service center needs to do it?

this happened to me on a k12, and my mic tech said that it was probably a tiny hair or something that was actually lodged in the capsule, so it needed to be cleaned.

like everything would work fine, until the warmth of a breath came close to the mic, and moved/ heated the dirt/ hair.

Could it be moisture???

Try leaving it in the sun for a while and store it with those
things in the bag with crystal...y'know the absorbent stuff.

one "interesting" thing I noticed in this is that this problem seems to only come up somewhere in the first 1-3 hours. After that, it seems to be all ok. No need for power on or offs.

For the last couple of days I have turned it on in the mornings, having to turn it on and off once or twice for the next couple of hours or so - then in the afternoons/evenings it seems to be working all ok.

Not sure why this is..

I've been told by the rode service center in Sydney to always store it in its plastic bag with the pouches....whastever they are called.

If i don't pack it away I just leave it on until I do.

When mine gets moist it sounds like gusts of wind then after an hour or so it goes away....I never pack it away ...stupid and lazy i supose....

but i think that moisture us an ldc's worst enemy.
