need tom mics

This will be for recording a 12" and a 14" tom,
I already have 1 SM57(used for snare) and an ATM25(used for kick).

here are the contenders;

-Audix D2 and D4
-Beyer M201
-Another ATM25
-Another SM57

It has to stay cheaper than the MD421..

The Shure beta 98s are close to the same money as the beyer. Just something else to consider.

I love the Beyer on snare but not on toms. I'd pass on the 57. First why don't you test the mics you already have on toms ( 57 and AT) and see if they do it for you.
I'd go with 421s myself, not that much more and a standard.

The 58 is cheap and suprisingly good on toms , when I didn't have any godd mics, I'd use the 58s on a ton of stuff, vox obviously but also toms, amps .I always liked them better than 57s.

The e604 is also good and cheap, I find it a bit too on toms for my taste but it does the job.

OK, as long as it's OK to sound way better than an MD421 on toms...the CAD M179!

I'm another big 421 fan. AS alternatives, I've tried the ATM25 on floor tom and it sounded quite good. EV 408/468 (sounds good and super easy to position) are cool and so are Octava MC012 (use the pad). For super cheap the AT Pro25 are cool and they're pretty small which is a bonus.

A + for D2 and D4 - I have 2 D2 and 3 D4 and love 'em. Sometimes live I use ATM35s (now ATM350) which sound surprisingly good, and are useful for a lot of other things too...

You might consider an AT Pro37R. It'll take high spl's, it's cheap, and it's small which allows for better placement. Works well on toms and other applications.

Get a pair of oktava 012 with the pads, and you will be golden!
Powerful sound for toms.

I do have a pair, and normally use them for overhead, unless I buy a pair of Gefell
M300!

I said this over in another thread and I don't think you can get these yet so that might be a problem but the new Kel HM-2d's seem like they might be a contender for toms.

I compared today the following on my toms;

-ATM25
-MD441
-SM57
-Oktava MK012

The Oktava was the best of the lot by far,
then came the ATM25, the 441 and last the SM57 that made the toms sound like cardboxes..

The Oktava sounded really realistic round and full, whereas the others had more attack
and didn't quite capture the resonance of the drum.
The spectrum was really wider on the Oktava, though I'll have to filter the lowend as it is quite big!

You might also try the older Sennheiser 504D's or the newer version, the Sennheiser E604's - both right around $100 each.

Damn guys, he said CHEAPER THAN THE 421!!!!! I swear, does everyone have to recommend something out of the clearly stated price range?!?!? (not you warren).

Sorry, couldn't take it anymore. ATM25's are great on toms, and cheap. We've got 4 of those and 4 421's, and they get used about equally. I also like Sennheiser e609's, the side address design makes them good for tight spots. They're a little brighter than 421's. Last, check out the ATM 250's, side address condenser, haven't used them yet but I've heard a lot of great things.

Yes I did say cheaper than the 421!!
AND I prefered the MK012 to all the dynamics I've tried including a MD441..
So I don't think I'd be impressed with the 421.
I'll go and get a second pair of MK012.

Thanks
