Martin Birch console(s) questions

Hi,

Noob to the community, but have been a reader for some time. Plenty of quality ears and minds here it seems! My question is, I was wondering what console Martin Birch used for tracking and mixing of the Iron Maiden "Killers" record? It was tracked and mixed I believe at Battery Studios in London, in 1981.

The sound he created for that record is mind boggling it terms of mid-range punch. I laugh when I hear Paul Di'Anno's voice pound thru on tracks like Wrathchild, and Killers...and the bass and drums..... What a sound, one of the best sounding rock records ever. And just to think I like The Bee Gee's, Bread, and 10cc =)

Best,
dean

I don't know why but for some reason I keep thinking Trident, possibly Raindirk. I may confusing that with Kingsway....yep, now that I think about it Raindirk sold their first console to Kingsway. I have to agree that Killers is potent album for the time it was released.

Funny thing is.. they all (the band - Steve!) hate that album production wise...

I think its their finest moment... the songs are absolutely killer!!

Maiden with Dianno was awesome ... and Clive Burr was God!

Don't get me wrong i LOVE Nicko and Bruce and all the maiden albums up to and including 7th son... but after that.. I lost interest...

One of the great bands and great producers ever! How good are the toms on Piece of Mind... Magic!

I found this trying to research:

MySpace.com - www.myspace.com/thecrashfactory

I don't know about Killers being done on an Amek. You would think this info. would not be that hard to find but surprisingly, there is very little about it out there....at least that I have found so far.

I was thinking it was an API as Martin used to love working on them. Is it possible it's a MCI Series 400 or 500? Those consoles were pretty focused in the mid-range and a bit darker, no?

I thought Maiden didn't work with Birch until number of the beast? I also read somewhere they were scared to call him to ask about producing the record...

on the classic albums dvd he is using an MCI of one type or another.. it's been a while I can't recall

Killers was the first one "the head master" did with Maiden.
