audio driver bit depth vs. recording bit depth

uh,...im confused.

i use sonar 6 producers edition.
i'm wondering what is the difference between audio driver bit depth and record bit depth.

since i upgraded my computer, i been recording 24bit/44.1 but today i do in options-audio and notice my "driver bit depth" is at 16 bit. so i try to change it.

sonar says back...format not supported by sound card (motu 828 mk1)

so i go into check my global audio options and record bit bit and render bit depth is both 24.

does it make sense to record 24 bit if the audio driver bit depth is only 16. i know the motu is 24 bit....

HELP....plz

See if you can download an updated driver. That doesn't sound right at all - you should be recording 24 bits, but it seems like you are only recording 16 bits.

Most DAWs have a function that allows you to see the properties of the wave files you are recording. Even Windows Explorer can tell you basic file properties, so check if you are recording 24 or 16 bit wave files.

audio driver bit depth

Hello musaee,

I have the same issue and question for anyone out there who may know. But, I record in 24 bit as is shows at the bottom right of your SONAR screen, next to the red "arm"( when recording). Its reads 44.1 Khz 24 bit. Now when you record a track export it in 24 bit and see if win media player will play it, mine doesnt, because wmp wont play 24 bit files. So I am assuming they are 24 bit. Im not sure what the 16 bit deal is. I use MOTU 1224's with the PCIe 424 card. Anyway, maybe we will find answer, Ill call MOTU in the a.m.
