audio driver bit depth vs. recording bit depth

uh,...im confused.

i use sonar 6 producers edition.
i'm wondering what is the difference between audio driver bit depth and record bit depth.

since i upgraded my computer, i been recording 24bit/44.1 but today i do in options-audio and notice my "driver bit depth" is at 16 bit. so i try to change it.

sonar says back...format not supported by sound card (motu 828 mk1)

so i go into check my global audio options and record bit bit and render bit depth is both 24.

does it make sense to record 24 bit if the audio driver bit depth is only 16. i know the motu is 24 bit....

HELP....plz

See if you can download an updated driver. That doesn't sound right at all - you should be recording 24 bits, but it seems like you are only recording 16 bits.

Most DAWs have a function that allows you to see the properties of the wave files you are recording. Even Windows Explorer can tell you basic file properties, so check if you are recording 24 or 16 bit wave files.
