looking for guitar speaker sim (not from amp output but from guitar pedals)

Looking for recommedations on a guitar speaker simulator.
Not the type that runs from an amp output but rather the kind that goes from guitar pedals/efx to the console.

I'm tired of relying on backline gear for my sound.

My clean sound is fine going DI but for crunchy stuff comes the need for a speaker simlulator. Already have a seperate loop for crunchy/higher gain pedals so I'm just looking for the best speaker sim to insert into that chain.

So I ask the question to the GS braintrust.
(please keep this a pod free thread)

thanks for the input.

For live or studio? The reason I ask is that 'speaker simulation' means different things to different people. Primarily, it's just a low pass filter that removes the high end fizz. Guitar cabs lack tweeters, and roll off above 5kHz. They also have differing bass response, so some high pass filtering might be required too.

Other makers also include ambiant modeling to their speaker simulations, maybe giving virtual mic and mic position. Basically, it's more eq followed by some delays or reverb.

If it's for live, you don't need ambiant modeling, so just a good eq is all you need. You mention effects - possibly you have everything you need in one of those effects boxes. Or get the best eq you can afford (I hate cheap eq's - they tend to add excessive noise).

If it's for studio, the best cabinet emulation is a convolution reverb running a pipeline (100% wet) impulse taken from a great cabinet in a great room. You get the total effect of amp, cab, mic and room, and it's very convincing.

Cabinet impulses are a great idea. Gotta try that sometime.

But as you guessed its for live purposes.
Looking for the best version of something like the H&K redbox

Hoping to find a fellow Gearslutter who has tried them all and found the grail.

Thanks for the impulse tip!

SPL Transducer DI / Speaker & Mic Simulator

SPL has a new product called "Transducer" (model 2601) and they have specs and audio samples on their site. I've loved everything else they make, but this may be new ground for them. Is anyone familiar with this unit or had a chance to try it?
Here's a link:
Sound Performance Lab – Transducer

Most of the POD type junk is only usable for full on distortion. I've found NI's Guitar Rig software and pedalboard I/O handles the heavy stuff as well as clean tones and actually provides some convincing amp models without sounding overly gated and effected.

Different situations can change how you feel about your particular "simulator". There are so many variables, I carry Hughes & Kettner, POD, Palmer, and Sans Amp. They all have been useful in different situations. It would be hard to go wrong with the Palmer all the way around though.

I have an original Line6 POD for sale in the gearslutz classifieds section right now for *$99*

It's in brand new condition with all the original packaging.

It is one of the best guitar direct recording amp/speaker simulator ever made. Much better than the current POD XT and all the other POD models. The original is the best still. It was $500 when I first purchased it so this is obviously a steal. It has served me very well and was used on some hit records.

Good luck with your search

Well that last post certainly covered everything ... in shit.

So much for the request to keep this a Pod free thread.

I was assuming by "guitar speaker simulator" this was not about a guitar amp simulator. They really color up the sound and add distortion and amp voicing, and i'm not sure this is what was being asked for.

If it's just to take the fizz of a guitar preamp tone, it's hard to beat a good eq. Most guitar preamps have a cab emulation anyway, so i'm a bit puzzled.

I hope this thread has "legs" as I'm very interested in these types of units.

Anyone else with real life experience with any of these boxes?

Kiwi - your right that that's all I am looking for.

All I need in distortion sounds comes from dist pedals so just looking for a small box that eq's the highs to simulate a speakers response - ala the redbox. Just looking to find the best one.

This is all for playing live concerts so I don't have to rely on backline amps.
My clean sound is just a neve preamp into a tc g force. It's set to go direct to the house and its a thing of beauty.
The struggle is for decent dirty sounds in this config.
I have a side loop for dist pedals that ends in a dist pedal that has 'speaker sim' on all the time. sort of works ok but looking to improve that last piece of the chain.

Pods - can't live with the latency. I use them for jingles and b'way shows but not for my thing.

Sans amps - right idea but not my fav dist sounds by a long shot.

Currently have a lovepedal I ...well ....love alot. Just need a compact box to - as kiwi puts it - "defizz" the hight end.

thanks!
