Recording accordion

I have a guy coming in tomorrow who wants to lay down some accordion tracks. What type of mic(s) and mic placement tips would you suggest?

as far away as possible?

sorry couldn't resist. (Actually it's pretty easy, 2-3 feet from the instrument. A ribbon if you have a quiet room might be a good place to start)

I really like ribbons (R-122) for recording accordion. If its a button type of accordion (common in "música norteña", mexican music that is) I like that I can aim the null point of the royer to the buttons so it tames the (button) noise a bit.

I do a lot of accordian stuff.....trio, duo and solo. Classical mostly. These people are amazing players show the instrument in a totally different light.

I tend to use two C12VR spaced omni about 8 feet from the instrument. On most pro accordians the bass comes from one side, and the melody the other. I like the omni because it keeps the image from becoming too bass to one side, melody from the other, but still gives a big room sound.

Whe the trio plays.....two full accordians and a bass accordian, with an amp....I put one C12 on each full, a Groove tube MD1 on the bass, and a Blumlein pair of Coles 4038 10 or 12 feet out.

I usually go with a pair of Royer 121s. One on each side. A lot of times the accordian player likes to change the balance depending upon the song and intended effect.
