I feel the same way you do. I was only introduced to his music last year. It's so dissapointing to find something you like, jut to find out that the great person who made it is no longer with us. I wouldn't compare MUSE to Jeff Buckley, but I do find the lead singer's voice to be somewhat similar.

I was turned on to Jeff by a friend of mine who worked at Sony when Jeff was working on the Grace record and I got to see him several times back in the day before that fateful Memphis evening. Grace is a masterpiece, IMO. The first time I heard the title track I was knocked out.

Another great record that a lot of people wonder why they never heard is Dag's first record, Righteous. Not quite a masterpiece, but definitely one of those "why haven't I heard this before albums?". I saw Dag on their Righteous tour in Athens, GA. The other Dag records were disappointing, but that's how it goes sometimes.

The "Grace" album sounds like a deal with the devil.
Never before or since have I heard a performance like it was their last.

Dare I say, I can actually feel him dying on this record and strangely enough, I feel I want to die with him. Powerful stuff.

The song writing is brilliant on that album. The engineering was flawless. I doubt there's more than a handful of people that frequent these boards that have the ability to engineer an album that well (and there are some DAMN fine engineers on these boards). I would love to see the gear list on that album (although the performances were 99.99% of why it sounded great).

Yes...Distorted Lullabies by Ours is a really good album. It's surprising that more people dont know about them. The singer Jimmy Gnecco(who apparently wrote everything on the record) sounds exactly like Jeff on some parts. He can scream exactly like Jeff, but he also has his own thing going too. Some really nice songs on there.

But......few will ever make a record as magical and haunting as Grace. It is one of my favorites EVER.

There are also some great tracks off of his posthumous album "Sketches". A track called "Vancouver" is one of my favorite Jeff Buckley songs. And apparently Jeff wanted those taped burned. Man, I often wonder what that next record with Andy Wallace behind the board would have sounded like.

Yeah Vancouver is like wtf happened there. Unique guitar parts and then that melody on top . Beautiful guitar sound to boot. "Yard of blonde girls" would be my second on that album.

Jeff Buckley actualy did a live cover of

NUSRAT FATEH ALI KHAN

The Album "Mustt Mustt" on Peter Gabriel's Real World Label, blew me away the first time I heard it in 1990

and it still blows me away...every time I listen to it.

It is
Qawwali music from Pakistan...

Nothing came close until Jeff Buckley and years later...System of a Down.

And blow me away that Andy Wallace did Buckley and Mixed SOD...

double blow away........

It's funny someone on another thread a while ago said that Grace sounded like a bad demo WTF

You have got to be in full rigor mortis not to fell a chill run up and down your spine listening to this one.

Brilliant artist. Guitar chops and soulful vocals, with taste and feel.

Yeah Jeff Buckley, was an extraordinary talent.
Grace is awesome, My favourites off of 'sketches' are "Have n't you Heard" and "Satisfied Mind". I believe the later is a Dylan song-but a beautiful archival recording that I personally relate to as Jeff's 'last' song

I had the exact same reaction when I first heard 'Grace', still do. I recently bought a Studer CD player for almost nothing, put on 'Grace' knowing that it is not only one of my fave records but also one of the best sounding, and was BLOWN AWAY once again. Incredible.

A few recommendations:

Get the 2-CD Deluxe edition of 'Live at Sin-E's', originally this was a live EP with solo perfomances that Columbia issued shortly before 'Grace', sort of to introduce Jeff to the world and also because 'Grace' took so long to finsh I believe. The reissue adds tons of material, it's very quirky, sometimes a bit over-indulgent but it paints a great picture of Jeff's panoramic influences: Nusrat, Led Zep, Dylan, Nina Simone, jazz, Van Morrison and a hundred other things. It also shows the amazing depth of Jeff's guitar playing.

Another recommendation is 'Live at L'Olympia', IMO the best of the issued live pefromances. In between 2 songs Jeff does a 'Kashmir on 45' sketch that has to be heard to be believed.

If you want to know more about Jeff's life as well as that of his father Tim Buckley then 'Dream Brother' is highly recommended. It's a GREAT biography utterly devoid of any cheap sensationalism.

I gotta listen to 'Grace' tonite.....

Glad someone has heard of them. That album was one of my favorite records of the past 10 years. I saw them live a few times, acoustic sets in small clubs, and larger venues also, and everytime I was shocked to see this little guy belting out such huge sounds. I was very suprised that they didn't get really big here even after Steve Lillywhite produced their album.
At the same time, Jimmy embraced the fact that he sounded very much like Buckley, and he use to do some songs off of Grace live.

I would check out the vinyl version of Grace totally different sound. I haven't listened to it in a while, but I remember it being much more "acoustic" sounding and way deeper and intimate. It would satisfy a desire to hear more music like Jeff's. Even better, it is Jeff from a different viewpoint.

Grace is a truly brilliant album that for some reason I didn't know about until a few years ago. It makes you wonder why it isn't more widely known. Another singer/songwriter type that you might like, who like Jeff Buckley is great but not as widely known is Elliot Smith (the albums Figure 8 or XO). His stuff's slightly more down to earth, and I can't comment as much on the production aspects (I'm no audiophile), but his songs are amazingly well-written and varied.

His father Tim Buckley has some pretty avant garde albums (like Starsailor) from the 60's that are at least interesting to hear a few times--although not a timeless classic like Grace.

I always find Grace to be a bit too polished... Yes amazing performance from the musicians but it has a slightly "pop" production which I find irritating on some tracks. I think he wanted to go for a edgier sound with the unfinished 2nd album hence the Tom Verlaine sessions etc... Unfortunatlely we will never know..."Sketches" is well a collection of unfinished or simply inferior tracks from a burn out band after a year of solid touring... which were not meant to be released ( as per the band's guitarist, JB wanted to burn the whole thing and start afresh just before he died)
Jeff Buckley live was quite mesmerizing (I had the chance to see him at the Olympia, Paris in '95.)

For the people who don't know his father's work...Try happy Sad or Blue Afternoon...
He has also written "Song to the Siren" which has been brillantly covered by Cocteau Twins...The mad thing his that JB became intimate with Liz Frazer...

also a HUGE jeff buckley fan here. ever since that album (grace) came out.... i've known it was one of my "desert island" albums.

for fans of that sound ... someone else already mentioned Ours - Distorted Lullabies. which is a great album also - not quite grace - but still really good. i saw them live in atlanta a few years back - pretty good show.

other recommended listening:

josh clayton-felt - this is the guy who used to sing for School of Fish (had the hit "3 Strange Days" a while back). his solo album is pretty cool. it's a little rusty in some spots, but still some nice songs and it's a got a good vibe to it.

starsailor - their second ( i think) album - "Silence is easy" is a nice piece of work. again, not the masterpiece that Grace is, but it's got some of the good vibe, and the singer has some similar sounds. interestingly, Starsailor is also the name of an album by Tim Buckley, Jeff's dad. presumably not an accident.

I also like Jeff Buckley very much, but I actually think that some of the tracks on Grace feels out-dated, very "impregnated" by it´s time.. And some that are totally amazing.

I get some Jeff-vibes sometimes when I listen to a swedish artist called Nicolai Dunger, check him out:

www.myspace.com/nicolaidunger

Nicolai Dunger

kostnadsfria,nöjesguiden,räknaren, niklas, visitors, site, amazing, nicolai, welcome, picture, sweden, called, thanks, dunger, above, north, enjoy, start, piteå,hope (a fan page with some more info)

..he doesn´t have much songs up on neither his myspace nor his homepage. One of my favorite songs by him is "Look what they done to my song, ma" (from the album "Sweat her kiss"), and the favorite on his myspace is probably "Sangen over bron". His voice is just great, and I like that he doesn´t stick to a winning concept, but keeps on trying new approaches to his music all the time.

A great album he made recently is "Nicolai Dunger sjunger Edith Södergran"..

Yeah, too bad for all you non-swedish speaking people out there though.. The "Edith Södergran"-album has great lyrics aswell. Edith was a finnish/swedish poet who died 1923, and Nicolai has put music to some of her texts, really beautiful album.

grace is my favorite record...EVER.

i had the pleasure of knowing jeff back when he first was touring for Grace...late 94 early 95 ?? sadly, at the time i was a 21 year old jazz snob, and just did not get into his music...he and his band, and sound guy were always really nice folks. enjoyed seeing him live, but did not get it...really only listened to a few tracks a few times...just did not get into it then.

i lost touch with him as his fame increased...when i heard he passed away...it hit me really hard....i went home...dug through all my stuff, and found the grace cd he and his band gave me years back...i put it on...and it simply floored me.

it still does....everytime.

the songs, the arrangements, the guitar playing, all the music..and that voice...wow. AW made it sound so nice...just a perfect album in my opinion.

what a shame that he is no longer with us. he was a TRUE artist...and a wonderful human being. he left us all with the amazing gift of his music.

miss ya jeff !!!

"Dream Brother" is indeed a great biography - I really was enthralled by it. I was equally enthralled by Grace when I first heard it; it's hands down one of my top five favorites! Alright, I don't know what the top five are, but if I did, Grace would be in it.

Columbia/Sony didn't like it because it didn't sell right away the way they expected (their ego), never understood (shallow ears) or appreciated it (disrespected great talent) ... and gave up on pushing it early.

And the labels are not to blame for the demise in good rock? Sometimes they are.

To be fair to Sony, he was a bit of a prima donna at that time. Once the sales and marketing ppl feel disconnected from an artist, for whatever reason (bad attitude, drugs, etc), the artist will suffer. I know this was the case with him at that point in time. It's a two-way street.

Regardless, Grace will likely in be in my top 5 records forever.
