In an article in the current issue of Recording magazine,Toby Gad states that he quadruples lead vocals and stacks "numerous quadruple background vocals".

Oh, yeah, I should add that I do approve of, and love to, double BGs. That's a great sound! Absolutely a must for a lot of things.

I remember when I was 13 I heard my friend's copy of the Blue Album by weezer, and I loved the vocal sound on that CD. I listen back, and alot of it is doubled. It's a recording technique that's used throughout the album, and it works. And then their 2nd CD comes a lot, and none of it's doubled. How about you double it, and then don't use it if it sucks.

It's not a bad idea if the Beatles liked it. Yet later on they had ADT, which is a bit different.

doubling

instead of using a doubling plugin, if you did not record an overdub i would just copy the original vocal and paste into a separate track. Then make it slightly (maybe a split millisecond) out of sync with the other vocal to achieve the appearane of an overdub.
