beginner help with midi keyboard/synths

I play guitar and i sing in my band but lately I've been wanting to dive into the realm of keyboards and synths and all that cool stuff. I have some cheap $150 radio shack keyboard, yet it has midi so I can hook it to my digi 003 and use it as a nice size midi controller. I've recorded some midi stuff using garage band and ableton live. My question is, people who work a lot with midi keyboards and synths and such, are they just connecting their midi keyboard to the computer and getting their tones through whatever software they are running? Is it easy as that? and how does garage band and ableton live's virtual instruments compare to other software?

Yes, exactly. I use Sonar, and the way this program works is you create a MIDI track for the MIDI note data, plus an audio track for the synth or sampler. You can insert any type of synth into the audio track and control it from the MIDI track. Yes, it's that easy.
