Thread Starter | 85db without a Meter...anyone?
Hey guys This might be fun I know a lot of people are so used to hearing mixes at 85db without a meter How would you describe 85db(the flat freq level)? I have a good description that involves how may feet away a person has to be before you cant hear them talking while your listening at 85db. Anyone have a good description? You can joke around too

i find its usually if you have to raise your voice to talk to someone about 3 or so feet away (arms length) its over 85dBSPL if you still have intelligibility of speech at that distance your in the ballpark of 85dBSPL |

yup. Raised voice - not yelled.! 85dbSPL (actually the oft quote figure is 83) isnt that loud, so you shouldnt be yelling your guts out!

I find that 85 is just before things 'seem' to get genuinely loud. But maybe that's just my ears.

I find well-mastered music just sounds right at roughly that volume. On a full-spectrum playback system and treated room of course. Level can be seductive, but then you go demo something to someone, and they don't turn it up, or their system just sucks, and the experience doesn't translate. So you're forced to make it seductive and powerful at 83 or 85 and you end up with a better product. Not to mention functioning ears. |

I agree P Loud covers up a lot of inbalance too. I love monitoring at real low levels for the most part then checking at the right level. |
