Thread Starter | Hi, I have a Kawai K5000S synth and bought a Behringer FCV100 volume/expression pedal today in the hope of plugging it straight into the 'EXP' socket and using it to tweak assigned parameters. All it's doing is acting as a volume pedal, in the sense that pedal down is 100% vol and pedal off is about 10% vol. There is no gradation. I have done all the right things , I think. I have tried TS and TRS jacks, in every possible combination coming out of OUT 2 on the pedal (as recommended in manual) and with the CV switch enabled. Anyone? |

| By default, most synth patches will respond to an expression controller as a volume pedal. You have to program them if you want to control other parameters. There will also be a minimum setting in the pedal - most people don't want a volume pedal actually cutting right off, so usually you can tweak the minimum level setting. Look for a small level control somewhere on the pedal, or read the manual if you must. Also be aware that within the synth patches themselves, they may be defined to respond to a limited range. A midi controller is just a means of controlling data - numbers from 0 to 127. What those numbers actually do is totally up to the synth patch designer.

| Did a quick google and the very first sentence I read is this: "This stereo pedal is equipped with a Minimum Volume knob and a battery strength LED. ..." You realise you might need to turn the knob down? I even wonder if it's actually an expression pedal at all. They call it a CV pedal and talk about it "sending a signal" from output 2. That sounds suspiciously like it's intended to drive real analog voltage controlled synths ... the manual is a bit unclear what they mean. If you getting a volume change without running the audio through the pedal, you must already have it working as an expression pedal. Turn the minimum volume knob off (counter clockwise) and then dive into synth programming to make it do what you want. It's basically a stereo volume control primarily - so you have two inputs and two outputs, and it controls the level of both via the VCA amps. If you want to use it as a CV you have to set the switch to CV, and use the output #2 to connect to your synth. If it's actually an expression controller, you will need to use TRS. Good luck. |

| Lives for gear | Just plug in the stereo cable into input 2, set it to cv, turn down the volume knob to the lowest level and off you go... As far as I know there is no difference in volume or expression except volume is CC7 and exp is CC11 (I believe). I use the behringer on a wide range of synths (korg, ensoniq, yamaha and opcode too) and it always works... Though the problem I find is that I never used an expression/volume pedal that has a linear response. Everything below 105 is practically very soft, everything above is kind of loud... (Have that with bespeco, m-audio and behringer) |
