ATTN ALL AKOUSTIK SLUTZ: Used to Have 2 Rooms.. Now 1

We knocked down the wall that seperated the live/control rooms, now we have one room measuring roughly 30' x 20'.

The problem now is its no longer soundproof.

The rooms were built upon a floating floor, ceiling suspended, basically a room in a room... 2 layers of 5/8" sheetrock used for the walls.
So now theres this gap and I had sealed it with sheetrock, but it aint really doin the job.

I've read about an acoustic sheet, kinda like thick rubber thats used to cover the room before any work goes into it... Anyone use it in a situation like mine?

How can I make my room soundproof again?

auralex make a mass added vinyl like you're talking about. I've used a similar product, it is very effective.

your problem isn't entirely clear, but you should just be able to seal the gaps you have made using pretty much whatever, as long as you seal it all and do a few layers (that was the simplified version), probably best just to copy off how the rest of the room is made

You're much better off using more layers of sheet rock than those rubber products.

when making my vocal iso booth I was amazed by the effectiveness of some of this mass added vinyl. After putting it up there was much more isolation that I was expecting.

I also tried using a spray can of something in the iso booth after putting up only the vinyl and just about deafened myself, as none of the sound was escaping from the room. The room with only one layer of plaster board and the vinyl was very isolated.

I didn't check it at low frequencies, since then I now also have lots of layers of other stuff on it as well, including dual walls, floating internal structure etc..

I imagine there are more cost effective solutions, and the vinyl is quite hard to work with (try carrying a roll up a flight of stairs for instance, even with two strong guys it was a mission!) but it definitely works

the gap is about a foot wide.. this goes around the entire studio.
besides sheetrock, is there anything else in addition to that i can use?
my sister in law sleeps right above the studio and its a bit of a drag to lower volume whenever she goes to bed.

like I said, pretty much anything

heavier and non resonant is better

make a few layers, preferably of varying mass, (to take advantage of impedance mismatch)

seal all the air gaps on each layer.

I don't know what you're fixing it too, but you could get those acoustic spacer tin strips that hold the boards off the frame work, to minimse transmission

If you have more than one wall, fill the gap with reasonable dense fibreglass

done

Did you build the walls both ways and measure the leakage versus frequency with and without the vinyl? That's the only way to know for sure how much the vinyl is helping.

At low frequencies is where the extra mass and rigidity of drywall really shines compared to vinyl.

Exactly, and that's my main point. Not that vinyl doesn't work, but that the same amount of money spent on drywall works better.
