Should I buy the LAVRY or the CRANESONG?

Hello,

I need to make a decission between the LAVRY BLUE's and the CRANE SONG HDD-192 as my primary converter unit.

You see the thing is I currently record everyhting with my MOTU Traveler and want to move to the high-end scope of conversion, so I need to make a decision between these two units.

I was told that if I buy the LAVRY blue that I would also need to buy the ST & SR Controller from Dangerous Music in order for me to control my volume of my source professionally, is this the case? (My traveler goes into my amp and my amp to my monitors) If so, is this also the case with the HDD192?

From those who have used it, can you tell me if I will be able to use the HDD192 with the traveler succesfully?

Primarily I only have vocals, acoustic and elec guitar to worry about that needs to be converter A/D, the rest of my stuff is internal audio units programming.

Will crane song be just as good as a lavry blue?

I see the crase song has triode/pentode/tape sounds...how does one exactly use this? Will it have an effect on my tracking? Where do these settings really come into play?

I know I asked a lot but basically I just need to know which one to get the LAVRY BLUE or CRANE SONG HDD192 and will they work with my current setup?

Thanks.

you need some sort of monitor controler anyway, either built in like in the case of Lavry Black or separate like Lavry Blue + coleman...

CS Hedd doesn't have built in monitor controler. It has those harmonics generating algorythms inside. It is also more expensive than lavry.

Sound it individual, so first try them and then buy what you like more.

If you're looking for D>A only, then the Lavrey Black is very nice. It's got a volume control and sounds great If you're looking for A>D>A then the Hedd will provide a bunch of attitude, if you wish. Crane Song also has Advocet which reportedly is a great monitor controller/ D>A. I have the Black and HEDD both.

+1 for the HEDD.

love it..

the tape + tube controls are a very welcome bonus. they sound quite nice!!! the clock is solid (will make a noticable difference if you slave your MOTU to the HEDD clock)...

great unit all around.

You should try both in your signal chain because at that level of quality interfacing issues could easily tip the balance in one direction or the other. I'd also try a Benchmark and a Mytek for the same reason.
