Cubase upgrade deal

I have a question regarding the 50% off upgrade from Cubase AI to Cubase Studio or 4. Do I have to register my copy of AI on the computer I will be using it on in order to take advantage of the discount?

I'm planning on getting the new iMac, which I will be devoting to Cubase but I'll be cutting it close to the June 30th deadline for the upgrade deal. If I don't have the new Mac hooked up before that, am I able to register/upgrade on my current Mac in order to get the deal? Can I transfer the info onto the new Mac?

I was able to lock down an N12 at a local dealer! Kudos on the great sales! This forum definitely helped me decide.

Because Studio 4 and 4 use a dongle, they are not dependent on a computer..

Here is what the website says...

Please send verification of ownership of qualifying product to id@steinbergupgrades.com or Fax to 831 477-1206 after placing your order. Verification can be an image of your competing product's installation disc, manual cover, or sales receipt:

Call that number that George provided. When I upgraded all they asked for was the AI serial number and it was all done over the phone. Very easy.

Sometimes i lose connection between cubase and the n12,in other words the light on the console goes out?Which lends me to believe it might be a issue with cubase?Any one else have this happen? jz

When I have this issue, I power down and reboot the mixer (speakers off of course )

usually when you lose connection it is due to a 1394 clock issue.
The to remove the usual suspects:

1: Turn off wireless network connection
2: disable 1394 network connection

Those are the main ones there are more.

As long as the 1394 chip is compatible , you should be fine.

Here are the Requirments
The N-series requirements for PC OS list both NX and Vista. Is there any advantage of one over the other? I ask because most new PC's (laptop in my case) ship with Vista.

Good question,

Are any of you running Vista?

My daughter has an HP with Vista, maybe I'll steal it for a day.

With my Mac & N12 I don't usually need to reboot. I quit Cubase, reset the Mlan connection by turning it off/on, and run Cubase again..

For the Mac, I would suggest turning Connection Manager off and then on again.
It should reconnect without quitting Cubase..

You should never power the n12 off without first turning off the Connection Manager. It can make the buss and the 1394 device less stable.

When this happens to me, I immediately remember to disconnect the other FW drives. Doesn't happen regularly, though. Doesn't happen at all without the drives.

Oh, it might disconnect, if you have a severe dropout ie: not high enough buffer setting.

Are you talking about the buffer setting on the mixer or in cubase?

Buffer settings in device options in Cubase.

Once or twice, I had accidentally left it at 256, and got into some heavy sections of a track, and the light went right off.

Could have been pure coincidence both times, but I doubt it. I like that it turns off rather than struggle though horrible clicking and popping which can't be a good thing for the N12.

What, is everyone too busy with their N12s ?

Any new tips, any interesting routing schemes, is anyone else using VSTi through the N12 without bouncing the tracks? I am considering adding a piece of analog gear (tube), to use directly on VSTi going through an N12 channel

I don't know where to start though? Anyone have a few minutes for some advice?

Well thats new to me. I have now disabled firewire lan. By the way I had no idea that I could not turn the n12 off if it failed to respond.

I have a long standing problem (no not that tutt) I have a dual boot pc and every time (well nearly) that I chose a different boot drive the n12 sticks with the compressor red lights on and the driver won't start. The only way round it (re-starting the driver doesn't work) is to power off the n12 or unplug the firewire and plug back in. Then start the driver.

I think this is my pc specific. What is the best method for me. I don't want to damage anything.

Cheers

Rob
I was using a Focusrite Liquid Mix until I started using Cubase4 and the n12 on a mac mini with only a single FW400 bus. That didn't work. I asked in this forum (in dec/january) and George (aka Geosync) said I should try getting a machine with two separate FW buses and hooking the n12 and LM onto those, to avoid conflict. The Focusrite team said something similar, but didn't have any experience with the N12.

So in a week or two I am upgrading to a Mac Pro and will get an extra FW pci card to hook my beloved Liquid Mix onto. It has been idle since I got the n12, and although the n12 has been fantastic to work with I still miss the comps and eqs sometimes. Will keep you informed!

Question Geosync, just an observation / question...

I have never ever seen a piece of Yamaha gear other than old NS-10's in large studio's or for that matter small to mid size recording facilities.

Why is that?

Do some research. I came up with these very quickly.

Impressive list. I'm certain it only scratches the surface. Didn't see any n-series on that list. I guess it doesn't fit the target for big-time endorsers.

Interesting to see the number of folks listing 02R96 in their gear list. That's something I've always wanted to try, but could never afford.

I've seen quite a few live venues using Yamaha boards, but only a couple recording studios. I've only been in about 15 studios in my life. There must be hundreds, I'd imagine, or why would you continue to make the things?

If it's good enough for Alan Parsons....

Sorry no

A channel strip has 2 digital and 2 analog paths

ANALOG
ST Bus (Post Fader)
AUX Bus (Pre Fader)

DIGITAL
DIRECT OUT ( to Computer via 1394)
REC Bus ( to Computer via 1394)

There is also the REVERB send but it will be routed back wet to the AUX, REC or ST Bus

Let me know if you happen to test it... I guess no one is using Vista yet. Doesn't surprise me with all the negative press that Vista recieves but I think this will be an issue as time goes on.

I asked our support guys about Vista. They say about 2 out of 5 PC calls are Vista users.
As long as they have at least 2Gig of RAM, they seem to be running fine.
