Thread Starter | selling my mpc need a good software alternative for looping and drum sequencing
peace to all havent posted here for about 6 months now havent needed too but i have finally decided to sell mpc2000xl. Forgive me if some of my software questions sound elementary- i have been using mainly hardware all these years. I need something software wise that can replace my trusty mpc since i travel alot and dont really like lugging the massive thing along. I basically need sumin which makes loop creation easy and gives me full control over drum sequencing- drum mapping etc (something that allows me to turn off snap- i like perfect imperfections). My mpc has been serving the purpose of taking old 70s samples - lets say at a tempo of 70bpm- looping certain bits and timestretching them to the desired tempo. I also use it to chop up old breaks and make my own drum patterns over certain loops . What program software wise can give me what i need?. timestretch and bpm finder is key. since i have to find out tempos on alot of old stuff and change them slightly etc. also as mentioned earlier i need something that will help me map out drum hits with complete control (move them slightly to the right etc without snapping to a grid). can anyone reccomend anything. many blessings ps i use an apple mac |

if not on my mpc i use a combination of pro tools and reason, and that seems to be fine for me. truth is, there is no software that can do what the mpc can do exactly the way it does it, but some come close. if i want to make a complex drum loop i will use reason instead of my mpc usually because its easier to make little changes here and there. i hate my mpc's timestretch so i might use pro tools for that. just experiment with different ones until you find one thats right for you. check out battery too hear thats pretty good

thanks all -CHILLYTC I have heard alot about ableton live. What is it like for timestretching and looping etc. somehow software always seems real complicated and cluttered to me- is it simple. also does it have a drum sampler or would i have to use it with battery 3 or the like. Also are there drum maps on it and would be able to change the midi notes on the map a little bit left and a little bit right without it snapping to a grid. syra i would use a pc but pcs always seem to fuk up in my experience and my g4 has never given any problems. shame they dont make fruityloops for the mac tho. black animal i have not really used reason but i have heard you cant use samples in it you have to use rex loops etc |

Thread Starter | i hope not. this is a new age and using software gives you so much more control. im trying to follow just blazes example. alot of hip hop cats are dumping their mpcs for software. As i said i need something that allows me to adjust the hits on the midi drum map infintiely without snapping so i can create my own swing. also something that is killa for looping and timestretching

Hell, people sold their 2000XL's to buy the 4000's only to find out..."wow, I liked the 2000 better", or it sounded better, easier to work with, etc. If you're switching up, just do it for the right reasons. At least then you won't kick yourself a few years from now. | |

Roll with Reason, Recycle and Abelton. I sold my MPC 200XL about 2 years ago and really dug into Reason. Once you really get to know the workflow its simple as pie. Record your samples in, open Recycle save it as a Rex File, then you can load it into the sampler and do what ever you want to the sample etc. Abelton is sick, everything locks to your temp on the fly. Just my 2cents. |

| Keep it for the touch sensitive pads.... other wise for drums... Have you tried FXpansion GURU..... It will blow you away.... Battery is a good sampler for drums. And Groove Agent is the best drum machine I have ever used...for real drums. Kontact....that's a good all round sampler. |

im basically looking for something that has good drum maps. where i can move around the parts as i like (a tiny bit here a tiny bit there to add swing). One of the shortcomings i found with the mpc is you couldnt see the drum parts you recorded so you couldnt alter it from the screen- you would have to play it again.

Do u mean as a waveform? If thats the case grab a 2500 or 4000, the usb will help u alot since u seem so pressed to go ITB, i still rock the ASR wit 8 outs, no waveform, just numbers, but it forces me to listen to how i trim my samples instead of lookin at a screen all day.

If You learned to work with MPC You just have to check out the GURU software- its a mixture of step sequencer and groovebox with tons of drum samples and a pad layout just like MPC - You can connect the Korg Padkontrol to it and You have an MPC on speed- but in a software domain. I use it with Ableton and I think its the most intuitive and flexible combos out there for programming grooves. The pads accept drag and drop function so YOu just drag samples on any pad You want and bang on it. Try it. Its simple- but if You want it can be complex- many routing options and sample editing stuff. Very neat. Peace Marty |

Most professionals use Logic. The new version is dope. Most film composers doing midi use logic as well and many hiphop producers. The bottom line is Digital doesnt sound as good as analog tape and your sound will suffer if you dont record the sample well. I like how my MPC Sounds more than i like how Protools sound. but i do use reason and it works well for demos. If you wanna get serious go for Logic Pro
