Bass Pod or Avalon 737 & LA2A for Bass Guitar?

Bass Pod or Avalon 737 & LA2A for Bass Guitar? Any experiences? I'm going directly into the board.

These are about as opposite as one could get.

What kind of music are you trying to do? If it's pop that is going to need some very unique sounds I would get the POD. If it's fidelity I would grab a great river 1 channel NV and a tube tech CL1B, LA2A or something of that nature. I wouldn't factor the Avalon in because I think there are better places you can spend money on bass sounds.

i'd go with a great river mp-1nv (or mp-2nv) and a cranesong trakker (or distressor). i'd avoid the bass pod. if you really want a bass 'preamp' type device, i prefer some of the sansamp stuff.
good luck

I second the distressor....great for bass, most bass anyways. If you want that vintage bass....use an old DBX 160...

I have never been impressed with the bass POD.

I get much better results using a either a Sansamp Bass Driver or a Countryman DI into the Mic input of a Great River MP2-NV

I'm not sure why, but to my ears I get a better bass tone using a DI into the mic input rather than using the HiZ inputs on the NV.

Has anyone else noticed this?

I can't say ive used the bass pod BUT i use the 737 into La2a all the time on bass and its DOPE!

I always use the 2 mid range eqs on the 737 to cut a lot of mids. Its definately a thick smooth combo i can't imagine the Bass pod coming near. After all this is the real deal! Recommended!

I did a session where I compared a bass POD (version 1 kidney shaped one), Avalon U5, Sansamp Bass Driver, SWR preamp , alembic preamp, trace preamp (I can't remember what else), anyway, the sansamp combined with a parallel high quality DI was everyones pick,

Gil Norton (producer foo fighters and counting crows) and Danton Supple (engineer Coldplay, U2) where working on the project too, we all liked the Avalon best, combined with the sansamp.

the sansamp was also the preference over miking various amps (ampeg, trace, GK) with neuman mikes and vintage neve preamps.

So I'd say buy a sansamp bass driver and an avalon U5 (their DI)

I vote:

if you're a mediocre bassist:
TAB-Funkenwerk DI into
Distressor

if you're a great bassist:
TAB-Funkenwerk DI into
Crane Song Flamingo

The distressor is better if you need to betterify a bassist's playing and distort it. The Flamingo is better if you want to show off the bassist's technique.

Demeter is also pretty slick and sounds sorta like an aguilar.

Done with the session and the 737 through the LA2A sounded WAY better than the POD. I'll probably look into getting the U5 and distressor in the future. Thanks for all the input gang.
