How do top engineers in the industry get paid

By the hour or by the song? How much does the the top engineer usually make a year around?

I differs ....everything is negotiable...


EDIT: Oh and if you are lucky enough to mix on a project were points are available there are some points invovled for payment. Usually 1

(seriously, there are no answers for these questions)

I have an aquaintance that is an "in demand" engineer in LA. He charges $75/hr. for either him and his mix room or to go to an outside studio, and he's booked most of the time. You do the math... this guy's a monster, though.

a friend of mine just got hired by a major hip-hop label as a recording engineer and is making about 2,000 a week. Even though he's an amazing engineer, this is his first real engineering job aside from his past working at the studio for a few bux an hour.
