What is the BEST COMPRESSOR anyway?

I don't get it.

THE BEST according to what?

According to who?

Would anyone like to give it a shot to shed a light on this?

If you dont mind the analogy:

Some will say the best car is a Ferrari, others will say Rolls Royce.

It depends what you want do do with it.....showing off, or drive fast, or have a party in the car etc etc etc

If I would have to choose one out of my compressors for the island it would be the gml 8900 since it can handle allmost any task with excellence

Secret weapon compressor...

Wait for it...

Alesis 3630.

Or a well maintained Fairchild, Pendulum 6386, LA-2A, Purple MC77, LA-3A...

Dump it. Get a Honda generator. They are real quiet and don't pollute much. They are also small and can be carried by 2 guys.

I've had some fun times in the woods playing through those, they will run my 120 watt head!

If someday you hear the Star Spangled Banner echoing in the woods at 7 am, that's ME!

lets put this back on track.
OBV Fairchild 670, Vari Mu, 6386, LA2A, 33609
then there are the distressor, FET II, 1176 variants, 525's and VCA types

all sound familar, and great on the appropriate source.

Satisfaction of having the best compressor is short lived, eventualy the other elements need different processing.

maybe the best one is the one that controls the sound the best. or destroys the sound the best. or enhances the sounds the best, or does the least damage to the sound while still clamping down on the loud parts. or reacts to ducking the snare in the OH's the best, or ect ect.

like what Jim said, sometimes the one that does the level riding and is faster and smarter than we are. and for that, the GML 8900 does just that, though its not the most sexy or vibey comp around, its prolly the "BEST", but it likely wont make a direct IP bass track sound all nice and PHAT. ya know

Dammit, I also got this generator. I'm going for the ultimate mobile system.

It's a bit shakey at the moment so I'm gonna get Black Lion mod on it to reduce jitter:

The best "compression" you'll get is probably chaining compressors with different caracteristics...if you have loots on money the best compression available without getting fubar vintage stuff would probably be TubeTech 3-band -> 1176 -> LA2A.

Have all compressors do just little compression each...first compressor with the highest ratio, next compressor with lower ratio and so on..

If you're just gonna get "one" compressor, get the 1176.

That's the one I have. Granted, the unit is 5 ft. tall and 5ft. wide, and includes a swimming pool and dartboard for the little man to relax on his breaks, but nothing beats the tone my Oompa Loompa can deliver.
