Guitar sound on "Underneath Your Clothes" Shakira ?clip included

Well , regardless of the title or lyrics ..... or even singer for that matter ... i find the el gtr in the song (intro especially) fascinating ...You can really hear the finger on the string ...sort of like what i `ve heard on Red Hot Chili Peppers but better ...and probablly not a strat too ...I just heard this on MTV so I don`t what CD it`s on or anything about it ... BUT I was hoping some hard core slutz have some answers on tap ...
How to get that sound ??? I`m a guitarist so I`ll guess at a few things here ... Strings couldn`t be too heavy ... British tubes (el84,el34?) ...vox amp maybe ? some kind of alot of compression .. I can`t hear it pumping so it must be some $$$$ studio comp working .
here`s a link to the video ......thanks

Not to hijack the thread, but this song is such a rip off of the Bangles Eternal Flame song... It always disturbs me.

he he ... that's exactly what I was thinking, and was biting my tongue ...

Nice guitar tone - my guess is maybe a Gretch or similar electro-acoustic? A tad of chorus - wouldn't be surprised if it was DI'd.

I can get in the ballpark of that type of sound with my import "Electromatic" (I think i'ts Korean) Gretsch (a Duo Jet) and a Hiwatt... I just got a pair of the import Gretschs, the Duo and a Dou Jet baritone. Both sound great for around $500 each.

AFAIK the session player was possibly Tim Pierce. Tim Pierce

I can't find a date for the interview - but sentence "I just bought a '58 Gretch Fire-Jet that I've used a lot in the last few months." makes me wonder ...

Thanks guys .... Apologies to the Bangles for posting this !
I`m less puzzled by what to play into an amp and what amp to use ....I more interested in how to get it onto tape ..... Might this be an example of the mighty royer ?
It sounds so close miked .....or could it be something to do with a room sound ?
Anyone experienced enough to say ..... It sounds like ___ pre or _____ comp or ____ mike ?????
My feeling is I`m hearing some kind of special comp working .....Anyone ?

thanks again

Thanks for the link ....If it`s him ... he say`s his favorite amp is the AC-30 and he`s been using an old gretsch fire jet.....sounds like that`s possible ...
Of course the tune has at least 3 tracks of gtr going in the first A section and there`s some detuning going on .... that surely makes it BIG ...

What about the COMPRESSION ???? I`d love to have that in the rig ....any guesses ?
or am I off base ? Might it just be a great amp? I think there`s too much sustain gong on for just an amp tone

You might want to talk to the man that recorded it.

You can find him here: PSW Recording Forums: Whatever Works

Ask for Terry Manning.

progress report .....I`m an idiot ! ' I got in touch with Terry on the PSW forum .....thanks again ,,,,,,well ,,,,
no comp ...but it IS a BASS !!!!! Guess I should have listened more to the content than the tone !
Truth is , I wasn`t drawn too it by the music as much as the sound that jumped out.

Mr Manning says ...amp with DI on a bass ...1073`s ...one mic ...great players

Sounds like a communication breakdown there ... you were interested in the GUITAR sound, were you not? Why the sudden interest in the BASS?

I was interested in the "guitar" intro and didn`t listen closely enough to realize that it was being played by a bass (disguised as a guitar ) ....check it out on the link ...I like it .

I get the bass thing

...But you could get similar resultd with a nylon string guitar and gaffer taping a 57 to the body below the bridge and throw a mic inside the guitar.

When mixing send the whole thing to an amp and mic it and blend it back in....

????
