Studio Projects C1 or M.Joly Modded ribbon for FOK/close room?

I am recording a heavy punk/metalish band. I've got a square room pretty much and I set up facing out from one corner. Looking at a box on paper, I set up from the top left corner facing the bottom right corner.

Also; I've got a subkick for picking up ultra lo freqs.

Anyhow. I need to decide between using an Apex 205 ribbon modded by Oktavamod or a Studio Projects C1 on the FOK. I know I have to keep the ribbon above sound hole level to keep the wind off the ribbon. Is that going to take away from some of the point of using a FOK?

I am quite sure that the ribbon sounds better overall. The reason I'm asking is that the ribbon sounded odd and boomy last time I used it as a far away room mic. It was in a corner; so maybe it was picking up collected bass in the corner?

Should I use the C1 on FOK and bring the ribbon in closer; still using as a room mic?

I know I can listen, move things around and experiment; but I don't have an assistant and I am recording with a big time crunch.

Thanks,
Rich

The ribbon is going to fare much better in this application. My buddy has a Studio Projects C3 and I personally don't think it sounds that great in front of a drum kit. I have a Shiny Box 46 which is essentially the Apex 205 and it has always rocked in front of a drum kit.

You can just stick a pop filter in front of the mic to avoid air blasts. Also angle the mic so that the top end is directed at the cymbals. That will put the cymbals in the null of the figure-8 pattern and give you some isolation. Place the mic about 1-2 feet out and dead center on the kick and you'll be smiling.

One mono Joly modded 205 w/ Lundhal tranny was the BEST room sound I have ever gotten. I'd have a hard time believing a C1 would get anywhere close.
