Where do you place your room mics when recording drums?

The majority of articles I read say to throw up the mic and listen while you walk around the room. My buddy was playing the drums and I walked around the kit until I found a place were the kick and snare sounded best and equal in volume (not muffled by the rack tom or drowned out by the high hat or ride). However I only use one mic and compress the doo doo out of it. |

my starting point is about 4 feet high about 4 feet in front of the drums, between the snare and the kick. Where I end up is never the same. Glenn

If it's a good sounding room, try pointing the mics AWAY from the kit.
