Avantone Cr-14 - holy crap.

Well, I just received a couple of Avantone CR-14 and CV-28s. Al I can say is that the initial tests on the CR-14 ribbons is pretty amazing. So much so that I’m wondering how the hell they can sell a ribbon that compares favorable with some of the best (and most expensive, like 5 to 10 times as much) ribbons I have ever heard. I know that the QC on these less expensive mics may be a little lacking, but I must have gotten lucky, because both of mine are stellar.

I have not put the 28s though any testing yet.

let us know about those 28's. Do you have a GT44 to compare it to?

Impressive midrange without harshness. Better bass and less prox than expected in this price range. Back side has fantastic bass and impressive hi-end. Generally tight, focused sound without being sterile. Needs a ton of gain, but that was expected. Against a 121, holds its own - the 121 has a little bit more hi-end, but I actually prefer the mids and lows on the CR. Good investment of $250 per mic for sure.
