Rufus Wainwright- Release The Stars. Excellent album, anyone here work on it?

I am really enjoying this. It's what I'd simply call very, very good music.

Even though some of the songs and lyrical themes aren't exactly "The sun has got his hat on and is coming out to play," there is a celebratory air about the production that is brilliant. It might not sound like Rufus was always smiling but it sounds like the engineer was. And those orchestral arrangements are amazing. They sound like they are from another era as though someone sat down with a huge collection of B&W movie soundtracks for inspiration. One minute the strings are flowing smoothly, suddenly there's an Arabian lilt then suddenly Rufus descends a step and a half chromatically before moving into a middle eastern warble. Clever and engaging, not always the most effective bedfellows but working here sublimely.

I'd really love to hear from anyone who has worked on this or has the inside scoop.

i think tom schick recorded it
and as far as i know rufus produced it.
rufus is, in my opinion, the most important
american artist of his generation - he is peerless

his live band right now is the best in the business
amazing !!
3 horns !!
one song features 3 basses !!

i am extremely blessed to have worked on so many
rufus songs and to be his friend.

he is someone who is always growing as an artist and as
a human being
rufus is in this for the long haul

be well

I'm also enjoying this album thoroughly, both from an engineering and songwriting perspective. Rufus has certainly taken "over the top" over the top - again!

One thing I found very interesting is the dynamic range of the album. The arrangements are so big sometimes the meters pretty much have to be pegged, but a song like "Slideshow" has a dynamic range not commonly found in modern records, to the point of it probably being troublesome for your average iPod/car stereo listener. A bold move, but apparently it didn't stop the record from becoming his most commercially successful to date. Imagine that!
