Both are great mics, the 421 is used on alot of stuff and the c3000 can be used on about anything....at a 400.00 budget i would get a Sterling GT66 tube mic..... for the buck they are bad to the bone, check ebay for a Sterling GT66 or a Groove Tube GT66, same thing. Here is 3 to look at eBay - gt66, Pro Audio, Musical Instruments items on eBay.com The 421 is more of a drum mic or voice sometimes, the c3000 is ok for the $$ on vocals.

| md421 I have both. The AKG is very nice for some vocal and is a condenser mic. The old md 421 is a fantastic Mic for brass instruments. I prefer these over the RE-20. Look for the older ones. Beige Color. Looks ugly, sounds great ! They are often on ebay for around 200 $. I dont know a better mic for the buck. |

| The AKG C3000 a great mic? You must be joking, I even like the C1000 better but I'm glad I've sold them. Besides that, the MD421 and C3000 are two completely different cats. There are many condenser mics these days that sound decent, the MD421 is a real classic, great for some jobs but a little hot sounding. For horns like trumpets the MD441 is better for example. For vocals I would prefer a large diaphragm condenser and there are many of them in the $400 range, try them. |

| The c3000b was the first mic I ever bought, really liked it based on the sound of my voice at a store, thought it did sound pretty 'warm' but in the end I recorded other people's stuff more than mine, so during the next 2 years, come recording time, it would interestingly always be the last mic i pick up for something, with one or two exceptions. If your vocals are all you're going to be recording, if you can compare them, go for that. If you can't, look for other options in that price range. If it's for your vocals, and you can describe what your vocals sound like, it might be easier to recommend something. If it's for other chores as well, and if these were my only two options, I'd go for the 421 II. Needless to say, they're different animals, keep in mind, all preferences and aesthetics aside, in terms of usage per cubic recordist experiences over the past 10 years, the c3000b is a mediocre condenser, while the 421 is a pretty superior dynamic. |

| c3000 is as terrible as c1000 is... it lacks body it is agressive and sounds really cheap for much less you can get Oktava 319, that isn't the greatest mic in the world, but it isn't as nasty as china stuff and akg electrets. If you're lucky, you can get C414 for $400-500 and while it is (againg) not the best mic in the world it is a good tool. IMO Cx000 series are overpriced and very thin/agressive sounding series. They were "good" for project studios before the chinese wall of mics hit the shops, but now you can get similar performance for much less $. But still it isn't worth. |

I sold the C3000's for €200 each and bought two Studio Projects B1's, which sound a whole lot better than the C3000 and cost €100 new. And I bought an MXL V69 Mogami and an MXL V77, both tube mics (LDC). I payed €450 for the V69 and the V77 together and both were brand new. I do have a Neumann M149, but some vocalists prefer the MXL V77 over the M149 because it sounds a tad bigger. The MD441 is not better than the MD421, I've never said something like that, the MD441 is a better trumpet end sax mic, but I do prefer the MD421 MK1 on trombone for example. Peace?

| I went to a local music store today to buy some guitar picks at lunch. I saw a Senn MD 421 and asked if it was for sale. The store owner said, "$100". Without hesitation I replied, "I'll take it"!. Took it back to the studio, works fine and not a scratch on it. I'm a slut, I'm a slut! I already have two of 'em. Lub, lub, lub 'em!!! |

| Gear maniac | I know this is an only discussion. That is my experience. I bought a akg 3000 C black and I recorded several songs during years. After many years I bought AKG 414 ULS ans TLII. Well, 414´s are better but when I recorded my voice with akg 3000 is darker and warmer. I don´t need eq if I cut 75hz in the mic. Depends of the songs, sometimes I prefer this mic. Wjen I use 414, I always need use eq. |

I heard from quite a few that the NEW 421's are as good or better than the vintage beige or white 421's.....

| AT4040 is a true workhorse while AKG 3000... well is not. 4040 isn't usually the best mic (it's not your ultimate vocal mic, acoustic guitar mic, overhead mic, amp mic, room mic) but it definitely never sucks. Doesn't hurt to have a pair around ![]() |

| so.. let me get this strait... you are asking us if we think you should get a Lousy Condenser mic, or a Great dynamic mic? If you're really aching for a crummy mic, get the AKG. if you want something of decent quality. get the sennhieser, the worst part about it is the mic clip. (a pain in the ass... but better than a mic that makes everything sound like it was made out of cardboard) |

| if you really lean on a dealer, you could get the Shure KSM 32 with case and shockmount - for about $400-ish - and it is a solid mic, and can sound very decent on vocals. (and lots of other things too) |
