Is this a hit?????

Hey there.

I was working away in my studio the other day - and while taking a break - was listening to some tunes.

Do engineers get a sense that - yup this is going to be a number 1 - and conversely - do engineers listen to a tune - thinking that this tune is lame - yet goes to #1 or at the very least is way more successful than they could have imagined?

Just curious...

Interesting question.

This is a personal motive for me. I wouldn't state laws.

I know when I'm recording or mixing, I tend to focus on how it should sound not how it already sounds.

I try to separate myself from the music(which is the final outcome) and put myself in the frequencies (which is what makes the music/sounds). So I focus more on getting the good SOUND and good EFFECTS rather than if I like the music or not.

Besides...SOMEBODY...some where WILL like the music.

I say. Don't go into the industry looking for money. Because the money isn't there. Go into it looking to complete the tasks you live to complete. (or fulfill a passion for as long as you can sustain it)

I realize the majority of this industry is business. But the real money flows in when you can make some one ABOVE your level like you. And they give you an opportunity to perform. In which case you make them money and in return they give you a cut.

So for me, hearing if the song is a hit or not, isn't really on my mind. I would just make it sound the way I want it to sound(or the producer or band). If it makes it..it makes it. if not. I had fun and learned a lot from my last experience and plan on using my knew experiences to help me progress in my life.

steve albini was amazed when the pixes started getting popular. he thought they were a 'mediocre band' when he was recording surfer rosa with them.

This question came to me not in the studio - but as I was listening to tunes on the radio.

I started to wonder if the people recording & producing the songs realized what a great tune they had - or were they just happy with the end result - and success kinda snuck up on 'em.
