That Sound

This stuff sounds so awesome, (Check Attachment). If anyone has any ideas or suggestions for getting this sound today in the digital/hybrid world I would love to hear your ideas. I think these recordings are some of the best ever made, seriously!

it's all about the bass, and an arrangement that stays the hell out of its way. get a player who can pull off that fat clean style, run him in thru a countryman or reddi, do a decent job with everything else and you're set.

mixwise, there's a lot of space because the drum sounds are so tiny and everything is pushed out away from the center, even the vocals. nothing is really overlapped. the mix isn't terribly compressed either.

you're right, it does sound really good.

If those vocals are 57's I want to know what they're running them through. Of course it all was tracked to tape. There is just so much mojo in these recordings it's ridiculous. If I ever make something that sounds half as good I'll be happy!

You can tell that the vox aren't being overcompressed if at all. Sounds mostly like tape saturation to me. The sound of tape still makes me smile .

Good point, I don't hear any compression either. The vocals sound so clean and natural to me with just the right amount of plate reverb.

What's sort of interesting if you're a geek like me and like looking at spectrum analyzers; (If you look at the wave file) these recordings go straight through the sonic spectrum instead of falling off at the high frequencies like a lot of other older analogue recordings.

I remember watching a documentary on Bob Marley. Initially their record company was worried that the band was going to waste the money forwarded to them to record. When the record company got the masters back they knew each and every cent went into the recordings. They where needless to say impressed with the quality of the recordings.
