I got the mackie and it works for me with OSX, HD3 and emagic amt8 interface, although I heard some MIDI horror stories... There is a lot you can do in HUI mode but there are weak points. One major drawback is bad V Pot calibration when using them assign plug ins or buses/ins/outputs. Just to assign a send to bus 10 takes about 15 full turns. You will still need the mouse here and there. MIDI latency did not turn out to be much of a factor. I have 8 channels only and I heard that on the extenders you cannot use the V Pots for anything but panning (no sends, etc.). Check out the Hui mode manual for use with PT .pdf at mackie.com.

Check out the new Tascam US-2400, it should be shipping in May according to Tascam. It has 24 motorized faders, rotary encoders and buttons that mimic the HUI, and full transport controls. Best thing is that street price will be under $1700.

There is a nice 'controller' coming out for PT
It's ONLY around 60k
Imagine how many trackballs you can buy for that amount of money

I do not have "heavy lifting" mixes happening at my place, as I recently came to the conclusion that Producing and Mixing should be done seperately (duh... huh?) I opted to keep my logic rig over PT in a recent upgrade. So... take this comment with a grain of salt...

I think the Mackie Control is one of the biggest bang for the buck purchases I have ever made. I am flying around Logic in a pretty effecient manner. I don't think it's as tightly integrated with PT, but for The $$.... damn.

Like I said... grain of salt.

I just don't see how this controller is acceptable. 24 faders with NO labeling. Bank around you'll have no clue what is what. I guessyou could go old school and break out the masking tape and a sharpie.

It gives me a headache to think about.

I'm with Kevin, I keep thinking "what were they thinking" making this.
No "touch sensitive"
No "scribble strips"

I've used tunesmiths mackie control for a week.
strengths....
price
footprint
response (it is good)
not paying for a less then amazing monitor section

negatives...
4 character scribble (no different then c24)
limited features
only 8 faders
not entirely expandable

If you only want 8 or even 16 channels, it's tough to beat. But after a week, I really found myself wanting more than 8faders and would resort to the mouse a lot. The pans are usable, and the sends really aren't
It was great for a couple fader rides though...

I am excited about digi's new console coming out...hoping I can reap some savings/reward on the used c24s or PCs.

Get a Control 24 & a monitor controller like the Avocet.

With the release of the new D-command thereīll be several used C-24 on the market. ī
Make sure to get one with the revised power supply.
Avoid the monitor section - it smears the low end...

A) I believe the Mackie Control has 8 LCD characters, I will check
B) The features aren't as limited as the US2400
C) There are 9 faders
D) It's plenty expandable.

You can also easily swap banks with the press of one button.

I know this is an old thread but since it's been bumped...

The US2400 looks great and is impressive looking, but not knowing where in the hell you're putting your finger without looking up your track in the DAW, finding the number and then counting faders on the Tascam...it's a pain in the ass.

The Mackie is very responsive, and with one expander costs $249 more than the Tascam. Worth every penny, they even include overlays for Steinberg / Pro Tools etc as they have actually worked with these companies to bring good features.

I recommend a Mackie with an expander hands down over one US2400.

I vote for the Mackie. It has really increased the speed of my workflow. mouse mixing sucks. It is a solid controller. My only bitch is that the faders are kind of noisy. The lack of scribble strips on the tascam make it pretty much worthless.
