friend wants me to record nylon string but i have never done this

I guess my question is what mic ,what preamp , NTK, royer121 ,sm57 ,baby blue bottle---great river nv-2, focusrite pro ,presonus mp20. I don't want to waste a bunch of time ,he is on tour and will be at the house on April 10 and I really want to do a good job , I have read every thread on here but I want to use what I have -I might buy another mic or pre if needed but I just want your inputs . Can I do this with what I have?
Thanks

it really, really depends on what style of music you're recording. If it's "pop" nylon, with a lot of presence, "latin" where the giner noises are part of the sound, or "classical" where the development of the sound begins a few feet away from the instrument.

Be aware that a nylon is a lot quiter than a normal steel string tracking, so things like room noise, player movement, etc. make a huge difference.

This last august i did a Lullabye record for an artist, all with acoustic piano and gut string. It's a trick - probably one of the harder acoustic instruments to mic well.

We ended up using an old Cole ribbon through an Avalon 737, with a bit of distance. The studio has two PZMs in the corners for room, which we added just a touch of.

I'd maybe start with the royer - you're going to like the resonance of a ribbon with the nylon.

If it's super quiet you might not get enough gain out of the R-121. If that's the case I'd give the Baby Bottle and NTK a shot. Setup both mics into two micamps and listen to both. Since it's a solo piece you might dig doing it in stereo. Mismatched mics can be good for stereo if you play with positions and the panning.
