What about the Soundelux u195 ? a good versatile male rock vocal mic ?

Hello guys,
I was wondering what were your opinion about this mic as a good versatile male rock vocal mic ?
Is it just a mic that only do the things a few times, or does it sounds great most of the times in this configuration ??

I've read many great things about this mic in this forum, but nothing to light my lantern about this particular question ...

For shure, I'll be using it for many other things, but still searching for a around 1k $ mic to tape male rock vocals, sweet low end, great mids and subtle but still there bump on the high end for this magical presence that can help to cut through a heavy mix ( such as a good Neumann would do ) ...
But most of all looking for this "larger than life" sound good quality mics have ... Not the crappy chinese tinny sounding mics and over agressive in the high end ...

If you have other suggestions, I'll be please to here them !

Thanks a lot

Have a nice day ! ( the wether is wonderfull here in France today )

It sounds excellent most of the time. No one mic works great ALL the time, but this one is a workhorse.

That describes it in a nutshell.

Thanks a lot !

Can you tell me if you can get this "bigger than life" sound ??
A sound that fells like it's in 3D, almost as if you could touch it ?

Thanks a lot Nathan ...

Anyway, think I'll give it a try ( but quite hard where I leave ... )

I'd say it's 'bigger than real life'...it definitely changes what you hear going on in the room in a good way, as compared to something like a DPA or Earthworks, which actually work pretty darn well on vocals in the right situation.

krucifyx:

I'm thinkin of picking up this mic too for rock vocals.
Or maybe the TLM103. The thing that also needs to be
brought up is what pre=amp to use. Since the 103/195
is not a 'tube' type mic, i'm thinking of using a 1073 type
mic=pre. Its a toss=up for me between the 2 mics so anymore
feedback would be great from you'all.

peace,
=j

I'll be using it mostly with my Joemeek VC1QS, I'm fond of this sound ...
However, it would also go into SPL, into Lafont ( maybe ), Neve or API typed pres ...

Well a TLM-103 and a U-195 are at rather different ends of the tonal spectrum... the TLM-103 being a bit more forward sounding and the U-195 being a bit deeper sounding so it's kind of comparing apples and oranges... and while the application of a pre-amp will always alter the picture, a vocal sound starts with a mic.

In reading your statement all I can think of is that you've read a few too many magazine articles or been struck by the 'buzz word bug'... toobs aren't necessarily "warm" [though they will often raise the ambient air temperature in proximity to the devices], and a "1073-esque" pre-amp isn't the Holy Grail of 'cool sounding audio' solutions.

The best route to get through this quandary will be to try a bunch of different stuff in your studio, on the music on which you labor and make an educated decision... while these boards are often filled with opinions that may apply to what you're doing, they aren't always directly translatable to your music/audio aesthetic.

Best of luck with the hunt.

Hey Guys-

I have been borrowing a U87 for the singer in my band, but alas, I will soon lose possession of this beauty.

I tried, after reading great pro reviews, the Rode K2. I thought it was nice, but the midrange wasn't as flattering to my buddy's voice as was the U87.

Hard to compare, I know, but does the U195 have any similar midrange bump like the Neumann? Maybe the bump is more in the highs, but you know what I mean, hopefully--

Thanks

PC

It's attenuated in the high mids with the bump around 12k (totally based on ear).
