Thread Starter | Please share your 1st experience singing into a neumann, wagner or wunder U47 type.
Please share your story. What was the situation, what did you hear (or not hear that you expected to hear) and what thoughts went through your head, positive or negative, the first time you sang into a Neumann U47, Wagner U47, or Wunder CM7.

I had saved my money for eons (this was 1973) and had finally found two U47's for sale way across the US from a dealer I knew. The day they came in I was home for lunch and quickly hooked one up to my Altec mixer, put on the phones and started singing into the mic (probably some old rolling Stones song) the first second or so was glorious, everything I had hoped for, everything from then on was awful. Both capsules were in terrible shape and at the time Gotham was the only resource for repair and they refused to even look at one of them as the serial # was too old, the second one they quoted a price that was way more than I could afford. Both mics went back for a refund. The 2nd U47 that I bought didn't exist and I had too chase that SOB for months . I finally nailed him. My 3rd U47 I bought non-working and sent it to Stephen Paul (this was about 20 years ago). After a year or so of waiting I figured I probably would never own a U47 when I finally gota phone call from Stephen. I picked it up at Stephen's apartment where he did all his work at the time and he put a set of headphones on me and said LISTEN TO THIS.....IT TOOK ME THREE REBUILDS OF THE CAPSULE BUT THIS IS THE ONE THAT REALLY GETS IT! Thats when I finally heard my U47. Still got it and was using it today on gypsy violin. It took a while but I'm glad I was able to get the mic of my dreams. |
