Why you dont sign with a major!

Pay attention to when he wants to meet the President... about 2 minutes in. How disrespectful was THAT?

...yeah, that's not just a business thing either. I've had corporate day jobs forever and it's just f-ing rude...no, it would be non-existent, to make anyone wait for 5 hours for a scheduled meeting. It would take all of about 7 seconds to ask the call to wait a second, walk to the door, shake his hand and say I'm sorry, something came up, let's reschedule. Or, it would take about 3 seconds to email your secretary while you're on the call to tell him that you'll have to reschedule. What a prick.

I would say the little secretary didn't even bother to tell the guy that he had someone waiting. She was probably too wrapped up in her AIM conversation.

I would've walked right in.

I turned a talented young friend of mine on to a local BIG publisher through someone else I knew.

This artist already had a well done CD and of course owned all her material outright.

While it's true that he could have helped her greatly through the people he knew,
he also wanted 70% publishing and of course wanted her to re-record everything
so he would own the masters.

She's still a poor struggling artist, but she still has her self respect.

Pretty uninspired sounding stuff.

"I have no desire to co-write whatsoever."

Hmm.....

Yea, the music blows. This kid will probably go nowhere, but it's a shame because he apparently has worked hard and there's a bunch of people kissing his ass. What they won't tell him is that in 3 years this music will be as outdated as late 90's rap-metal.

But yea, that president is a prick. I'm almost glad that no one is is buying their shitty CDs anymore. Ok, no I'm not, but he still deserves for his company to fail.

Just another cookie out of the big machine.

I feel bad for the guy (not that that made me watch much past the secretary saying it was 6 pm)... here he does everything "right" and gives the honchos the kind of manicured, heavily processed "rock" that system thinks it thrives on and...

... that said... truly boring product...

PS... I don't think we have to wait for this music to sound outdated... and now I'm back to some pretty timeless Louvin Brothers...

Well you should.. the best part of the entire video is the co-writting session with Desmond Child. ****in hilarious. I love how Desmond sits there like a prick, in his big chair, in front of his GIANT desk, with his grammy on it.. the two other guys are almost kneeling in front of him. It all has a "come on, impress me" vibe to it. Wouldnt feel comfortable co-writing like that.

And guys, why do we need to bash the kid's music? Lets just enjoy this video for what it is..

No, it IS outdated - today .. now ... in this very moment. That's why the guy doesn't get signed. you have to write the music of tomorrow if you want to be signed today.

Actually, I think you have to write about 15 minutes into the future.

I don't think most execs would know tomorrow's music if it hit them in the face with a dead fish.

Really?

Could have fooled me especially if you take into consideration that music from majors has sounded about the same for the last 10 years or so....

Oh and I am pretty sure this dude is "signed" he is just getting the same jerk off from the labels that most people do.

"Why cant he get signed?" Awesome. We are discussing how the label president treats him and then we get this comment.. TWICE! Somebody else posted this also before him But its awesome... finally people start exposing themselves... obviously this dude here didnt even watch the video to start with, and is just posting shit based on what some other people posted. GREAT! I LOVE IT.

No wonder a lot of people on here just bash/praise gear cause everybody is doing it... "uhhh, did you try this piece of gear yourself?" "no, but my friend doesnt like it"

"It's not Desmond, I just have no desire to co-write, whatsoever"

This kid plays with Avril for 3 years, a couple groupies tell him he should go solo, and the whole experience went to his head. This kid's career is over before it began, and he only has himself to blame.

If I was the president I would have had my secretary **** with him too.

I wonder how long it will be until he regrets quitting Avril Incorporated?

When Howard Benson or Desmond Child are working to help you write a pop song, and you're a little poppy teenboi, why the **** would would try to go against the grain? This guy not only played for Avril, he's suffering from the same "I'm not pop, I'm punk-rock" hallucinations she used to. At least now she acts like the pop-starlet she is and not a rock-goddess.

WB is a shithole record label. Just ask Mr. Bungle.

I hate this shit.

So ****ing cookie cutter, what's his biggest influence? Lifehouse? Perhaps that works synergistically with his STYLIST's biggest influence. Very important, you know?

I love how he tried to get the apartment Rick James died in.

The session with Desmond was interesting, tho. " Hey, I've had a great life... you're that kinda guy, you're not a misfit" - I love it!

Man, you really have to have your guard up with Record companies. Go somewhere where they treat you with respect and you give it back. If they are kissing your ass or the other way around, you are not at the right place.

Find the right relationship where you can thrive. My old band Signed a 3 album deal with a Indie label only after 5 months of negotiation with a Entertainment lawyer we hired.. If you are worth it to them, they will bend...

We ended up owning half the publishing rites and 16% net on each album, I believe.. What if we didnt hire a Lawyer and just signed the first thing put in front of us??

Fact is, your are going to get bent over by a Record Company..... its just how far, how long and if you let them decide to use vaseline or not..

i'm not into this music. but millions of kids, tweens and teens are. what can you do about it?

the desmond scene was too much though... sitting back there looking like gene simmons pre face-lift. that was kinda mean, and funny.

the smart artist/producer/engineer/human realizes that all of these people that are helping, or not, are just mile markers on a long highway. you can't let these things get to you. it's a huge waste of emotion.

I guess I must have watched a totally different video. The video I saw had a young kid living in a little fairy-tale world where people write magical songs in extended-stay motel rooms and experienced producers and record company people turn these songs into multi-platinum smash hits. Evan seems to be exactly the kid that Steve Albini writes about in his famous editorial. I didn't know that people still fell for this anymore. He should really listen to his mom and dad and go home and enroll at State U.

It didn't make me angry or outraged, just sad that this kid is probably going to be chewed up and spit out. That record company probably has dozens of them "in development" just hedging their bets to see which horse to put their money on. Everyone else gets sent home sad and disillusioned.

Oh, and yes, Desmond Child is obviously a pompous ass. If that's how he does every co-writing session, I doubt he'll ever come by another hit (honestly that is).

Sounds like he is going to get on some kind of Abercrombie "Sounds of Abercrombie" compilation at best.

Then again if he is recognized as "the guy who used to play guitar with avril" I could actually see him doing ok.

Kinda like Dave Grohl was "the guy who drummed for nirvana" but the difference is dave can actually write and sing pretty damn well.
