Thread Starter | Starting point for micing drums Hi there. I’ve visited this board on and off some time now and I’m constantly surprised by the level of expertise out there and the quality of the recordings published! With that in mind, I’m hoping for some advice for my specific situation… I’m interested in what your starting point would be for tracking drums with (only) the following available: <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /> - 1 x Beta 52 - 2 x SM57 - 1 x Beta 57 - 2 x Beta 56 - 2 x AKG 451 - 3 x AKG 414 - 2 x B&K 4011 The kit is a 4-piece Tama Starclassic Maple (22, 12, 14, 14x5.5). Beyond that everything’s going straight to an HD recorder (I’m limited to 10 mics simultaneously) – no nice pre-amps here I’m afraid! I guess I should be looking for a solid rock sound, since that’s the genre. For want of better examples, Nevermind and Blood Sugar come to mind (although when I think of favourite recordings Incognito’s Beneath the Surface really floats my boat!) The room is quite small (probably about 5x4m) and super-super-dry, so I’ll clearly need to use processing during mixing to add ambience…. I realise that this is a very general question (that it's asked an awful lot ) and the real answer is I need to experiment, which I fully intend doing. I’m just curious as to what your starting point might be – given the specific kit I have at my disposal, the specific size/type of room and the type of music, which mics would you set up first and where? |
