They asked me to be on one of the mastering panels again but with arranging this Helios listening party for the 23rd of June I just couldn't swing both. They are a lot of fun and a great 'hang' with colleagues.

I'll be there next year on one of the panels when it's back in New Orleans.

Jules, you need to arrange one on the other side of the pond so we all have an excuse to come for a visit.

best,
Larry

Umm, It was in Tucson last year also. I had a blast and the hotel was about as nice as any other resort.

This will be the maiden voyage for me...can't wait! Also, if anyone needs a roommate, my friend bailed on me at the last minute. I've got a double room booked at the Hilton from Thursday-Monday.

PM me if interested...

I'll be there.. I've gone for the last three years. The Tuscon hotel is quite deluxe and I am real happy it's back there for another year.

I am going to try to get away for the weekend but it's going to be a stretch so I am not sure if it's going to happen. They used to do it in New Orleans but after Katrina came through they had to change it at the last minute I think and from what I've heard the resort in Tucson is gorgeous. I bet they will go back to New Orleans or Portland maybe one of these years, but I read that Tape Op editor Larry Crane has a place in Tucson as well so maybe he's working on making it a home base.

I was already told next year it is back in New Orleans by Craig Schumacher (who organizes the event and also lives in AZ).

He asked if I'd be 'on' for next year downthere. Which of course I said yes to. Plans may change you never know. Larry is also keeping this place in Portland albeit in a new location.

I'm going, but it's, like, 45 minutes from my house. Sucks!
Fletcher was there last year, which would be well worth the price of admission.

TapeOpCon

I'll be there. Last year was great content wise....the Pot-Luck Studio concept was one of my favorite features (they build a studio and then have workshops running all day that show different recording and mixing techniques by different engineers with real live musicians playing their instruments). Also, hearing Jim Dickinson speak about recording and producing and making music was a major highlight. Of course, seeing Alan Tousaint speak the year before was pretty rockin' too...

I enjoyed the Tuscon one last year (the water slide and crazy desert scenery was pretty cool) -- but I miss it being in New Orleans... it was also nice in N.O. because you could explore the city on foot from the hotel. However, Craig deserves major kudos for organizing these things, as they look insanely complex to me - so I'm just glad it's held at all!!!

'yall should be going to this thing - it's great fun.

I'd like to go, but I always forget that it's coming up. Blah.

A friend of mine once one a day of studio time a Electrical Audio by cleaning up against Steve and some other cats playing texas hold 'em. Any conference where you have the chance to beat Steve at poker can't suck too much.

Must have gotten a great deal on the venue as everyone in So. Arizona bales out during the summer. Is it just me or are these always in a place with the worst climate of that time of year?

I would melt there like the wicked witch of the west. Maybe some day they will have it someplace it's not 110 degrees outside or 95% humidity?

Like maybe hold it in March???

Well, I'll be there! The last two were fantastic, I look forward to it all year.

Sometimes it feels like you're hearing the same advice and things over again at the workshops, etc., but that's true of engineering in general. Being able to walk up and talk to Rupert Neve is priceless. Add in Albini and Weston, Joe Chiccarrelli, well, I'm sure everyone has seen the list.

And it's not a huge conference, either. It grows every year, but it still has the feeling of a small gathering of a few hundred like-minded people.

I live in Phoenix, so Tucson is a cheap trip for me, but I loved New Orleans, too.

Hopefully, I'll run into some other Gearslutz!

The thing about the Tape Op community is that it's born of the DIY aesthetic. So, they try to keep the price of the hotel rooms at $99/night so that young people can afford it. They really bend over backwards to make it cool and it is, year after year. Well worth going!

If that's their goal, to allow youngin's to afford it there's a nice Motel 6 just north of town off I-10 with a nice polynesian pool that can be had for under 50 bucks. That's half price.

No, I think there is something else going on to continually hold a conference in an oven or a sauna. Maybe Larry will chime in and offer some insight into this practice.

Jim,

As a technical guy I'm sure you've heard of this thing they call Air Conditioning. It's a really neat system that lowers the temprature and humidity indoors. TapeOpCon BTW is held indoors.

Even as a South Carolinian it makes me shudder to think how stinkin' sweaty I'd be as well. Wish I could make it though, I think next year!

Ok, another reason for Tucson is that Craig Schumaker (who basically organizes the thang) lives there. It's easier for him to put it together in his hometown

It's mind blowing the type of high quality talent that is accessable there.

sure sounds like conspiracy to me. maybe next they'll start putting subliminal messages about satan amidst all the FREE knowledge they so gratiously share with all of us all year long.

i wish to hell i could make it to this year. i'm definately saving for next year. hope everyone that's going has fun.
