Microphone Review - Electrovoice 635a

Hi everybody,

I've been looking at the EV 635a. I saw it in the movie, "The Harder They Come", and was wondering if the mic was a good vocal mic or a better stage prop.

I'm looking for some inexpensive vocal diversity in my mic cabinet. I don't have a dynamic omni like this one and thought it might be an interesting choice.

Does anybody have any experience with this microphone?

I have two. Some people love them and occasionally I'll use them as a stereo pair on ambient percussion but...they are omnidirectional (I have suspicions that they are not true omni's but I'm not sure). I used them once on acoustic guitar for a little something different than the norm. They have a clear but somewhat neutral sound. No real proximity effect.

I have never used them live as a vocal mic but I would suspect that feedback would be a problem. You can usually find them on e-bay for less than $35.00 max so not much to lose.

They are great if you might be tracking keeper scratch vocals from a singer in the same small room with a loud band, since the bleed sounds good. Put something with a controlled pattern on the same singer and suddenly the bleed sounds like shit.

That's wild. Sounds like a great utility mic. Totally what I need right now. I've been smitten with ribbons mics, but for live scenarios I'm too scared to use them. Plus I need an alternative for mics and bass and...heck, whatever.

sure cheap enough to have some around. I'd rather make a record with a dozen 635A's than a dozen sm57's.

Dude, fark yeah. To hell with the grain train.

SM57 is a test mic. Granted, Steven tyler might use one, but I ain't Cherokee Studios.
