Thread Starter | Nuendo - Logic Sound Engine???
Don't hurt me, stoopid question I know but...I'm one who thinks Nuendo probably sounds better than PT in general but I like using PT software more...even though it's still LE for now. Any thoughts on how Logic sounds vs. Nuendo...not the feature set or PC vs. Mac - just on the sound. Testing blind I realize it's probably been "proven" there's no difference between any of them but any real world opinions? I've searched but it's usually Logic/Nuendo blows away PT or vice versa. Just curious as to some different opinions on the sound of Logic vs. Nuendo. |

i wouldn't normally regard nuendo or pro tools or logic as necessarily "sounding" better than one another. instead, i look at them as tools for managing and manipulating digital audio files. the digital audio itself seems to be much more dependent on my ADCs than my DAW choice. that being said, i prefer Nuendo over pro tools because for me it's a much more intuitive product. i rarely have to look up how to do something in nuendo. it could be said that some of the bundled plugs in nuendo are not the greatest, but much of my plugs (eq, comp, verb) come from my UADs. i guess the last factor in any "nuendo sound" would be it's summing algorithm. i don't know if its any different than pro tools. i do know some folks prefer to run everything out the DACs, into a summing box or mixer, and back in the ADCs. it's not something i do - as i don't have the $$$ to invest in the gear [i.e. the DAC converter channels, the summing box, and the better-than-my-current-setup monitors so i can hear the difference] ... but i suspect the benefit you get from that setup is amongst the last 1% to 5% of the total sound. |

I was using Logic 2.0 on PC, until Emagic sold out to Apple and they did the dirty on their PC users. Fortunately, Steinberg had just released SX (which uses the Nuendo audio engine) and they made a good offer to shafted Logic users. I was not pre-disposed to like Steinberg. I reluctantly bought into SX, thinking it was a backward step, but at least it had a future. I was shocked and stunned to find that SX sounded more open and airy, in a musically pleasant way, and Logic appeared to sound boxy and constricted, in direct A/B comparison. There were a lot of pissed off Logic users at that time who made the same transition, and made similar comments. It wasn't just my perception. Things have changed - i'm on Cubase4 now, so I don't know how Logic compares today. I can't say i'm 100% loyal or happy with Steinberg. I'm probably more pissed at Microsoft, so my days of being loyal to PC's are probably over. I'll probably buy a Mac next time around, and would probably re-consider Logic at that time. It's hard choosing a DAW - they all suck, just depends on where you need them to suck less.

bob katz discusses different audio engines alot on his site digido! . (hmmm, I just realised, I wonder if that is meant to sound like "doggy-doo") I THOUGHT I remembered him saying all 32 bit floats were the same, but I just read an article then where he said some manufacturer recently made a crap one , so I suppose they can't be narco

i don't think it really matters which one sounds better. we all know that many hits have been created on all 3 so if they can do it, why can't we? i believe the new scissor sisters was all mixed in logic! i think tony visconti does too

Nah it doesn't matter...just was wondering how some felt. I went ahead and got N3 but it wasn't related to what was said or not said here. I'd like to check out Logic at some point just to see what it's about. Thanks for the replys. When it's all said & done I still prefer the Mix & Edit windows of PT. |
