I cant say inexpensive, but you can't go wrong with Scott Hull at Hit Factory Mastering. I do some mastering on the cheap side, but Scott is the real deal.

Try Joe Lambert at Classic Sound. (www.classicsound.com) I like his stuff a lot and he's very reasonable.

Why not go with a guy who's mastered over 8000
albums, Greg Calbi at Sterling Sound.
If you liked Graceland, Born to Run, Double Fantasy, Bill Frissell, The Strokes.......well, you get my point. Plus, he's a great guy.
peace,

I second the emotion for both Greg Calbi and Scott Hull. Both very talented guys with great ears and a pleasure to work with.

Favorite mastering engineer in NYC: Tom Coyne at Sterling Sound.

Excellent yet economical: Nathan James at the Hit Factory mastering.

check Emily at http://thelodge.com she did an indy project for a friend about a year & a half ago. Very reasonable pricing back then for indy projects. Not sure what she's working with now.

Sterling Sound is kinda like the Hit Factory mastering, some stuff is every where(Prism,Zsys,Chris Muth,Sontec), some stuff is individual(Focusrite,Avalon,Tubetech).

Nothing really out of the ordinary.

The monitors that are used over there are: B&W 801's,Energy Varitas and Dunlavy's(not anymore actually).

Chap works a lot with Greg Calbi and i think he still uses
Proac Response 4's (maybe)?

Like Bob L. made Cello amps popular, the Sterling guys kinda put Classe amps in vogue(they are all over).

Its a great place to hang out and a nice vibe.

In NYC I've had good luck with Kevin Hodge at the Master Cutting Room but AT Michael McDonald is very good too and probably has more analog gear. Michael is a good deal too.

Define reasonable. When we called her about a year and a half ago the indie rate I was quoted wasn't reasonable at all. It was about what I made to record the album over three weeks. We ended up using someone with major label credits and charged us about 1/4 of the quote we got from the Lodge, and that included revisting a few songs.

All you need to make a record is a mic, some tape and maybe some bad reverb...

She's done some big records now so the rate I'm sure has gone up. Scott Hull has a seperate rate for indie stuff, but its still not cheap, except that it is
when you hear what you're getting. FWIW Joe Lambert was Scott's protege

Try Strerling After hours if you don't want to pay for a Calbi or a Jenson. Nah, get the Calbi.

I second Joe Lambert!

He mastered my latest 2 CD effert, "Purple Iron Hat." He did a fantastic job and it was a difficult album to master! There were 37 songs in total with edit pieces, diaologs and musical interludes that made it very in depth with the detail of the mastering, as it traveled from song to song.

I had the pleasure of working with Joe on September 11, 2003. I went to Classic Sound to help with the edits and the formal construction of the entire flow.

Joe is a great guy and a real lover of music, as well and a musician!

I hope to see him again one day and be fortunate enough to have the funds for such a class act job in Audio Mastering Production!

Joe!

Seems a post may be in order....just wanted to make the announcement here that I have moved my mastering operation from the now defunct Hit Factory Mastering Studios to Jigsaw Sound in New York. The studio is fairly young with a fresh design that is both aesthetically and sonically superior to the two previous New York mastering rooms I've inhabited. Needless-to-say I'm very excited.

Here's the new info:

Nathan James
Jigsaw Sound
110 Greene St. Suite 404
New York, NY 10012
Phone: 212-965-0100
email: nathan@jigsawsound.com

All the best,

Nathan
