Orban Spring Reverb-Good for Dub music productions?

I'm going to start collaborating soon on some dub recordings so time to start hunting for the right vintage spring reverb.

I see the Orban's popping up for sale quite a bit and they seem to get a lot of love around here. I know most folks seem to be looking for a 'smoother' spring like the Master Room but I am actually looking for one that accentuates the sound of the springs as opposed to hiding them.

The Orban in the same class as the Master Room? Can any of these boxes be modded to get the vintage King Tubby/Scientist sound I'll be after or do I need to get a box that's already got that flavor?

IMO any spring reverb, even the ones built into cheap guitar amps, can be useful for dub work, as long as you ride the faders to minimize noise. Check out Vermona for a nice high-end modern option, and check out Furman for a cheaper older option.

My $25 Pioneer SR-202 sounds excellent, and for the prices they go for, you really can't go wrong

The Orban isn't all the spring-y actually, due to the built in limiter. It does sound wonderfull though. The are other units that will "" more. The Furman for example. Have them both - very cool.

The classic Tubby spring verb is the Fisher Space Expander. I picked one up off EBAY for about 300...needed a little work.
I want to transformer balance th output to lowere the noise...
It is THAT sound you're looking for...

Thanks for the responses.

How bad is the noisefloor on that Fisher unit anyway?

I had an Orban and I would say that dub/guitar work would be about what it was good for.

One important proviso with any spring reverb. Do not store it in any fashion/at any angle not recommended by the manufacturer.

I bought mine used and must not have been thinking when I stuck it in a corner -- vertically -- for storage after I got my first digital verb.

By the time I dug it out, perhaps a year or two later, the springs were completely shot.

Being a slut, I've been eyeing this model but want to make sure I'm not missing an obvious cheaper alternative before pulling the trigger;

I e-mailed Theo about possible mods to get the exact sound I am after but have yet to hear back.

Hey Jazzpunk. How much IS that one you linked to, anyway? It looks cool, but it doesn't list a price. No listed price usually means "more than I can afford," But I'm curious anyway.

I think the best line of spring reverbs is the BX line that AKG used to do.
BX 2, BX 5, BX 10, BX 20, BX 22.
Ones in a while they pop up in ebay.
