Plus 1 for the Blue Blueberry mic.

Anyone else using these? I borrowed one off fellow local slut Sofine and I'm really surprised. It is really, really, really nice. Definitely now on my shopping list.

How does this mic compare to a TLM 103 or is it closer to an AKG 414?

I think its amazing that I almost never here anything bad about BLUE mics. I've used the dragonfly extensively and the blueberry a few times and they are both excellent mics.

I can not only say silky, but I can say silkyslightlymidpresent/withalmostzeroproximity-effect. BLUE is an ass-kickin' mic company, IMHO... they have a really nice variety of sounds to their products and none of 'em I've encountered thus far come even close to being anything less than eminently useful. Great support, too. What can I say - I'm a fan. But it's because they've earned it.

I like the Baby Blue Bottle even more. That is the best condenser mic you can buy for the money in my not so humble opinion.

I own one and it's usually a love/hate relationship... sometimes it just doesn't work and I want to sell it and never see it again... most times it's pretty damn good for hip hop vocals.

I like mine. I run it through a Grace pre and a UA M-610. Sounds nice through both. The shockmount can be a pain in the ass at times.

The Blueberry is the favorite mic in my studio. Great on vocals, nice air, the transformer adds a little weight to the thinner voices, and it cuts through mixes very well. Just make sure you get around 4" to the mic for the fullness to kick in....it's designed for close mic applications. http://www.digitalprosound.com/2003/.../blueberry.htm

Silky and Sibilant

I have one. It's okay IMO but it brings out too much sibilance for my taste. I bought a Shure SM7 and my Blue has been in it's case ever since.

Love my Blueberry a lot. As suggested, playing with the proximity makes a very big difference with this mic.

Hi,

I have a Blueberry mic im trying out at the moment to see if its worth buying.
First impression is its really good, but I too am suffering from extreme sibilance problems with this particular mic.
Any tips on positioning this mic for vocals to still get the nice intimate sound but avoid the heavy sibilance?

If you find it too sibilant, other than de-essing hardware or software, you
may not have another way to get around it. It's a very specific mic-in my
opinion. It sounds good on certain warm voices. But can easily be sibilant
and strident on other voices. If you have a sibilance problem, and want a
mic that's clear-sounding but not as harsh on top, consider a MXL 2003A.

It's also 6 times less expensive. Mike Joly has a mod for it that makes the
mic look a lot more expensive, and sound better. It really opens the highs
up in a good way, while keeping them smooth and non-sibilant. Compared
to the versatile U87 on his site, his MXL mod sounds impressive and open.
If the Blueberry does not fit your voice, test others to find one that does.

I am a fan.

For my big boomy tenor voice the Blueberry is a perfect fit. On vocals I put a pop right up on the mic and for aggressive lead vox I lean right up against it and belt it out. The signal gets glossy and puffs up with no boominess or mud. For backing vox I can back off a foot or two and take advantage of a natural high pass effect.

I had read that the Blueberry was good on snare so I tried it. It sounded great and the bleed from cymbals and hats sounded good, so I set it up over the kit. That sounded so good I bought another Blueberry so I could use them for overheads. The silky quality that several people in this thread have mentioned comes through beautifully in this application too. The effect brings to mind the things you hear when you push certain mic preamps, compressors and tape machines. I'm no tech but I fancy the silkiness is harmonic distortion generated by the output transformers. When using the Blueberry on sources that don't load it up it is quite clean and has a bright but not harsh character.

Of course they're not for everyone. What mic is? They take a little time to get to know them. On the color scale where ten is more colored I'd say they're around an eight or eight-and-a-half. I use them for heavy modern rock, classic rock and the like

The Kiwi is another blue mic that gets a lot of use around here. Vocals, room mic, cello, acoustic guitar and probably other stuff.

I type too much. I need to go.

Now I'm late

Thanks for the reply.
Unfortunately I live in europe and shipping back and forth between the states will result in taxes of all unearthly kind, but it does sound cool though.
I think you are right, the blueberry is not for me.
Is ther e any other mic's people here could recommend that is up front like the blueberry in same price range, but with less sibilance issues?
It will be used for Rap, Singing, acoustic western guitar, lap slide guitar and percussion.
Though Vocals are the most important as I have other mic's that can take care of the guitar and percussion

The brands I can get hold of is:
AKG
Audio Technica
Blue
Neumann
Rode
sE electronics
Shure
Studio Projects
Violet Design

Im particularly interested in trying out the Blue Woodpecker or even the Violet design Flamingo jr. Thanks

If you like the brightness, but want a little less, the Blue Mic Bluebird is
perhaps your ticket. The Audio Technica 4047 is warmer, but if you are
looking for some brightness, with less sibilance, you may find their 4040
is a better fit, and like the Bluebird, it is inexpensive. For the price of a
Blueberry new, you could get the Bluebird and AT 4040 for even less...
But again, I recommend a place that has a return policy for mics. Many
will NOT take microphones back that you may have bought and tested.
