monitoring?

quick question for all:

i thinking of upgrading my setup to some rack gear and an older mixer (with no aux sends)...
how would you monitor this / mix headphone outs?

monitor mix ITB send out through an output = latency?

split/ 'y' the pre-amp outs = loss of signal? (send to a monitor mixer)?

thx for any input...

I use the y split method. That way it's latency free when monitoring!! I was told as long as you use good quality cable and connectors and keep the split cable less than 2 meters then the loss would be insignificant if any at all!

Give it a go, make up one y split cable and one straight through cable. Makesure you use the same connectors and cable for both and all the exact same lenght. Then you could set up a mic in front of your monitors and play a few different instruments, bass, kick drum, vocal, hi hats, cymbals or else use a signal generator and sweep through the freq spectrum. Then record using one cable first and then the other. Thats what I did!

I used a spectrum analyzer and took snap shots of various points in each track and compared them and they were identical.

Actually, just thought of a better method, reverse the phase on one and if they create a null then there is no difference. Why didn't I think of that at the time????

Feck, I'll have to try that now.

great, thx!

that does seem like the way to go... get a cheapo mixer for the monitor mixes,, ( i could actually use my old one and get 3 separate mixes out of it!)

so to do this i could use a Y cable for the output of my preamp, send one into the line in of my interface, and one to the line in of my mixer? then monitor through the mixer for latency free?

im guessing thats how it works? id need a good, solid cable i suppose. mogami maybe?

doing a quick search i found only 1 --- 1/4" ts - y - 2 1/4" ts plugs (cableup@fullcompass)

mogami would be the way to go, but splitting 16 channels into 32 is a lot of wire.. i think theres actually someone selling some bulk mogami right now, here .. 54' < $1 foot...

do standard 1/4" connectors allow 2 wires into them, or do you need a special large opening plug body?
