That Western Guitar Sound, Moriccone - Signal Chain?

We are talking the stereo typical "The Good the bad and the ugly" electric guitar, how did they record that? I want to recreate something. Also if you are up on this topic what about the Pulp Fiction tremelo guitar?

Also any reccomendations for a 2 inch tape kind of plug in to dirty up my modern sounding recordings?

You know I played around with this a few weeks ago. I think its one of those Leslie speaker setups with a term vibrato at the same time.

For that Morricone sound you are after, I'd start with an open backed cabinet and a telecaster using the bridge pick-up.

Boost the treble.

There was a Guitar Player issue back around '95 (I think it had a Clint Eastwood collage on the cover) where they interviewed Ennio and how he got the whole Spaghetti Western sound.

Ennio's music is simply amazing IMO.

You mean Dick Dale "Miserlou"?

Most of that stuff is Strat/Fender amp/spring reverb/onboard tremolo/great technique

Love Morricone's music. He's a true genius. His compositions are overwhelmingly emotional.

That massive reverby guitar sound found on the Sergio Leone movies of the 1960's was quite popular in pop music at the time also - see Hank Marvin and The Shadows.

Also, Morricone's technique for recording was quite interesting in that that he used weird environmental sounds mixed in with live playing, and often used a singer to mimic the sound of an instrument. There's some stuff about this in the Sergio Leone biography by Christopher Frayling.

Paging James Willsey

For the Big Guitar sound, as heard in Chris Isaak's "Wicked Game", I believe Gearslut James Calvin Willsey used a Strat plugged into a Twin Reverb, with plenty of amp 'verb.

For excellent examples of this type of tone, I strongly suggest you listen to Richard Bennett's 'Themes From a Rainy Decade". He has clips on his MySpace site. Bennett is a master at this sound, typically a Strat or a Gretsch 6120

You can hear me attempt it here.

Click on "These Arms of Mine", which was done with a Twin Peaks vibe. Gretsch Electromatic into 1968 Vox Cambridge Reverb with the trem and verb cranked up high.

I remember reading somewhere that they set up amps in an empty pool and miced them on the other end for lots of natural verb...
