Okay so talk to me about the STC-8. What does it do well, what doesn't it do well? Can it do an SSL style grab on 2 buss if pushed? I am looking for something with a little character for 2 buss comp duties and I have been on the fence about this for too long so I want to start narrowing down the contenders for a shoot out. Thanks in advance.

it tracks well, it glues well, it does a lot of compression without sounding like too much compression, it warms things up in a subtle way. the closest i can think is daking, but it's a little softer in the middle and lighter up top. it won't do the ssl thing ime. but it does it's own thing, which i happen to prefer. i say get one my friend, you WILL love it! gregoire del ubk .

Thanks man!!! If for nothing else just for making my lonely thread a little less lonely... lol So I have been thinking of the STC-8, Zener Limiter and maybe a Vintage Design CL1 MK2 for 2 buss work (but I am a little worried about the "Fletcher Pimp buzz" that I might be buying into on the CL1, he is about the only person talking about it now and he seems to be really head over heals about it... not sure how to take that). Anyway yeah I know they are all pretty different but I get the feeling each one has vibe and character. It also seems like the STC-8 would have the most flexibility? Oh and thanks, I forgot about the Daking. I know a few folks really swear by them for 2 buss work. It's funny because I know allot of people say the FET Compressor II is like a clean 1176 but an 1176 is not something I would use on 2 buss.... strange. Anyway, I just don't know if the FET Compressor II has enough color for my liking? I will probably have to try them all. |

STC-8 is an outstanding 2 bus compressor... not the SSL thing but a very very high class highly transparent (unless you really push the input and go with the Ki setting...) It is also a great tracking compressor especially for bass and vocals. Still very transparent and for vocals you may want something more coloured like an 1176... but it is hands down the best thing I have heard for bass. I haven't heard anybody say bad things about them other than they are a whole lot of $ |

Very cool man, thanks. Yeah, not many bad things to be heard about it. But you said something that makes me think it might not be for me. "Highly transparent" is not something I am really interested in. I am not looking for a 2 buss comp to give me volume, I let the EM do that for me. I want a 2 buss comp for glue and vibe. The STC-8 might just to be too "nice" for my needs.

The 1968 seems to be a real love-it-or-hate-it type of box. I probably need to try one at some point but it really seems like people either flip over the thing or down right can't stand it. Seems strange. Not that other people's take really matters or anything it is just one piece that seems to have a very odd vibe to it and I don't know why. Like there is mojo that some people miss or there is a very special thing it does that some folks just don't like.
