I use real human to get real feel.... real human A.K.A backup singer...

I'm quite particular on vocal. Maybe because of my background when I was young, i have an a capella group.

Maybe you can try Melodyne to alter vocal for harmony. I haven't try it. But from what i read on their website, its so powerful....

my 2 cent...

I track a second time singing the harmony to the original vocal.

I wouldn't bother with a harmonizer outside of a solo live performance or something.

I might use melodyne to try something out, but I'd track it with a real singer, if at all possible.

I don't think many people use harmonizer type things in the studio, except for those detune-type effects you hear sometimes...

...

my voice, and hundreds of others...different voice types and instrument timbres make a huge difference - they can make an arrangement / production / section / melody / hook really POP (not the genre, but this statement does apply to the genre, too) professional and distinctive.

so, often i'll layer in other instruments- sometimes subtly, sometimes not, as well.

..
