sync 002 with analog multi track tape recorder

I while ago I posted this question and from feedback thought that the MOTU DTP ($1400.00) was possibly the right choice to syncronize my 002 with my FOSTEX G24S 24 track analog deck. I want to run protools and the 24 track similtaneously in sync. I can already dump from the tape to protools without sync. I dump 7 analog tracks with a click for each pass and then drag, or nudge groups of 8 tracks at a time using the click tracks wave forms to align. The transport in the deck is quite good. A song of up to about 8 minutes holds true from start till end. I was quite surprised! I would like to record on both mediums similtaneously, and play back in sync, again, both protools and the tape deck. One being the master and one being the slave. I would like to see the 002 be the master and have the deck chase. Or, should it be the other way around? I understand that striping the tape with sympte time code is required etc. OK, so, has anyone ever used a JL COOPER PPS2 as an MTC/SYMPTE converter. Out of production and hard to find, for about $200.00 I'm hoping this is the right tool to do the job.

You can do it with the JL Cooper so that the G24S is the master. Simple, take the NR off ch 24 and stripe the track with SMPTE then set the box to read the SMPTE from the track, this turns it into MIDI so that the sequencer can understand it. Don't know what to do in protools regarding sync i've only ever used it on its own. If your G24S has the 8330 sync card fitted then you can set the machine up to be the slave, however this is a lot more complex as to operate the 8330 you need to use many sub menus on the G24S and it takes a lot of time (or it does for me). I am sure you could get a JL COOPER PPS2 for cheaper than $200 on ebay if you want to try there.

NO you can't do it this way, there is wow and flutter on an analog deck that makes syncing your DAW alittle bit of an adventure. There are multiple threads concerning syncing a daw with an analog deck do a search please

OK thanks for info so far. I am trying to get educated here. I have the FOSTEX 8330 sync card installed in the FOSTEX G24S analog deck. Do I even need an external device or will this sync card do the job?

Sync card will do the job, it does for me. You can put the G24S in chase mode and this will lock the capstan motor speed to the computer and should be rock solid. However as I stated before the card is a bit of a nightmare to get used to due to the way in which the features are accessed.

Have a look at this, I asked the same question as you a few months ago.

How do I sync tape to logic?

Actually sorry I missed where you were having the daw be the master. Your sync card should work you need to set logic to MMC and you need a midi interface that will let you output code. The MTP av will work for this just set it to internal sync
