recording synths

Got a question to ask in regards to the analogue side of recording synths. How many of you record a synth thru a DI box to convert it to a balanced signal? If so why, considering the output is not high impendence?
If you run very short length cables there should be no difference (or so i thought) however there seem to be alot of people who do it. Is it worth balancing synths 'in the box' ie. have them moded??
Thanks
